At The Drive In. 5.
Soundtracks passion. Special Michel Legrand.
French composer Michel Legrand wrote more than 200 scores for cinema & TV. Spending the morning to listen tons of stuff (a joy!) I choosed a few very known compostions and some more confidential, from the 60's and early 70's (his best period, IMO). All have a rare elegance, inventivity and that personnal very identifiable style. * Michel Legrand, "Eva", 1962. Eva Suite From Joseph Losey's movie. 20 minutes of haunting jazz from the original 7" vinyl. * Michel Legrand, "Les parapluies de Cherbourg", 1964. Devant Le Garage (extract from the movie) From Jacques Demy's musical movie, certainly one of the "hits" of Michel Legrand and terribly sad song (and sad movie). The actors were dubbed, here Catherine Deneuve by Danielle Licari and Nino Castelnuovo by José Bartel. "The film score established composer Michel Legrand's reputation in Hollywood, where he later scored other films, winning three Oscars". * Michel Legrand, "The Thomas Crown Affair", 1968. Main Theme, The Windmills Of Your Mind, instrumental version Room Service A Man's Castle The Chess Game Cash And Carry His Eyes, Her Eyes (1st variation, voice by ML) Playing The Field The Boston Wrangler His Eyes, Her Eyes (2nd variation) The Crowning Touch + The Windmills Of Your Mind song performed in French by ML Complete score, vinyl version. Cult movie by Norman Jewison, and cult music. Oscar for "best song". * Michel Legrand, "How To Save A Marriage And Ruin Your Life", 1968. The Overture S'il Vous Plait Bossa Nova Winds of Changes Starring Dean Martin & Stella Stevens, comedy by obscure Fielder Cook. Great orchestrations of smooth jazz. * Michel Legrand, "La piscine", 1969. De souvenirs en regrets Run, Brother Rabbit, Run Blues Pour Romy Ask Yourself Why Solar & bitter movie by Jacques Deray, featuring Romy Schneider Alain Delon & Jane Birkin. Jazzy pop music, as always with perfect vocalists. * Michel Legrand, "Un homme est mort", 1972. Un homme est mort By Jacques Deray again, a good old thriller starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Ann-Margret, Roy Scheider, Angie Dickinson. An amazing funky groovy sound (and nice clip edited by the youtube poster)
