Poor Peru.

They waited 36 years to get into the World Cup for the very first time only to be eliminated in their 2nd game....

.... by the French too!

I'm still going to root for the underdogs c'mon Japan -especially following the story of their fans cleaning up the stadium after the Colombia win.

Follow them as a second team after England

Do not underestimate the Argentina/Nigeria game. Nigeria are often lacklustre in their attitude to a winner takes all situation. Argentina will be hurting and match up well against Nigeria. The Nigerian's will be defensively organized but lack punch up front. As Victor said, Argentina don't have the creative midfield to support their front. A lot depends on Nigeria v Iceland. If Nigeria win, they'll shut up shop in the big game. Any other result and I'll take Argentina to qualify.

Croatia were so good at one point that they used to deliberately handicap themselves by playing Josip Simunic in defence to give the other teams a chance. BTW. It was Simunic who got the three yellows. They should have won Euro 96 but were too busy kicking the Germans in the quarters to remember to play football.

Watching the Peru game yesterday I was trying to remember a player from their 1982 squad. IIRC it was Uribio Diaz. Supposedly he was in danger of missing the tournament for some reason. I think because he played abroad. So to make him eligable, a peruvian tv channel payed his transfer fee back to a Peruvian club.

Folks, is it me or has the WC games became juvenile not unlike those of school fights? i hadn't watch the WC for a while and when i did, all i saw were players whom were probably better off playing rugby or baseball: shirt pulling, body grabbing, skid sliding ... oh man. I first witnessed that kind of play from the South Koreans when they debuted many years ago, sad to see it has become something of a norm in these days.

Default PHEW... Serbia v Switzerland

Must be because it's Friday

Last Friday, the best match thus far, Spain v CR7

This Friday an absolutely stunning, truly end-to-end, high powered match.

Serbia took the lead against slower Swiss team, till the second half and the Swiss then overan Serbia.... who never gave up.
Equalised with a goal that's got to be a competition contender and then won it at 90 minutes.

I'm exhausted

Law 2018 states "any defending team, wearing white, the colour of truth, shall be able to alligator wrestle the opposing centre forward to the ground if the latter be wearing red (the devil's colour) without fear of penalty".

Prior to every game they show half a dozen officials sat in front of a bank of screens in Moscow, yet somehow they have managed to miss so much. It was supposed to be an aid to the on field crew and bring some consistency to the decision making, if anything it has just fogged the issue.

Time for a re think FIFA

Indeed. Even the wife got annoyed by my shouting at the tele and the amount of AC/DC schoolboy antics was practically in EVERY game. I swear i could have stopped watching if not for the creative passes and goal attempts of some teams (especially the south american ones) and the astonishing stamina of the icelandic team.

I am an American. Which team is favored and why? I am trying to sound informed when people ask me about the world cup.
