Chicago, Illinois USA had the storm of the decade yesterday. The rain and a wind of 26 mph started at 1 p.m. and lasted until after 10 p.m. Almost 4 inches of rain came down. My windows took the brunt of this onslaught. They are very weak and I had to use two buckets and ten towels to soak up all the water coming in. There is a fault in the outside brick that lets the water come in, and management says it can't be fixed for years. The apartment I inherited from my late parents is in a building that is almost 100 years old. It has landmark status, but it is falling apart. The plumbing, the water system, the heating system, the phone system, and almost everything else needs complete replacement, and the building just does not have enough money for this. The apartments in this building are quite large and exclusive, but because of age and wear and tear are only worth half of what they should be worth. I have lived here for the last 20 years, and though the building is in poor condition I will continue to live here. If I was much younger I would sell my apartment and move to Australia!

Gotta be a fluke, another reason why the other bloke lost, or the other guy had a bout of flu, so was not up to his usual standard, not that the British guy was better on the night and deservedly won, it is one of the thinks I love about being British, we always knock the winners and think a lottery winner is of far more importance than a World Champion or Victoria Cross winner! |

On a more homely level, it is looking suspiciously as though I might need to replace my faithful car after eleven years plus of faithful service. The thing is, there are younger cars in better condition (probably) which I can buy for less than the cost of getting my existing car back onto the road. My budget would be around £500-£600 including taxing the car. I am mildly intrigued to find that there are some options at this level. I can see on the web several Ford Mondeos around 12-15 years old which are in the ballpark and a Ford Focus 1.8 diesel estate for £350 or so; the Ford Focus diesel is a rather good car.
