Kids are taxi driven everywhere as parents fear for their safety, though the biggest danger is the amount of cars on the road during the school run. Many of the parents are also too fat and lazy to walk them to school. We all just went to the nearest local school, 'parental choice' now leads to total gridlock during the school run. I walked or cycled on my own from the age of six. This still happens in many other countries. Also, their free time is spent on technology rather than playing outside. |

If we think our countries have issues what about Venezuela
What has gone wrong in Venezuela? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-36319877 Rampant inflation, shortage of food and medicines .. the country is rich in oil but low oil prices highlights it doesn't pay to rely on one major source of income ( something that I hope that Nicola Sturgeon now realises ) It is so bad there are even reports of them eating their pets and morgues being full.

Venezuela is what is known as resource curse. If you have an abundance of an important resource it results in all sorts of stupid political decisions, such as relying upon imports for your food and essentials.

These items are all tailor made, and are very expensive, so no easy answer, except my ex boss had had the same problem, so I got away with borrowing his, with my own bits stitched on! The moral of this story, is that because of lack of exercise, I put on six inches in about eighteen months! I am still trying to get it back off! |

Was that BBC report mean't for Childrens TV. Venezuela was cursed with Chavez, an ex Army Major who had tried a coup some years ago and failed. When he came out of jail he had wised up and instead of a coup he tried the populist route, baiting the Americans (not the most popular chaps in Venezuela as they controlled the oil), nationalising without compensation (usually called theft) much of the property of major landowners and giving all the money to the lowest of society in return for their votes. As the economy suffered all those with money and skills tried to get out and the economic problems worsened. When oil prices plummeted the country became a complete basket case.

When the Americans were in charge the people got nothing. Only a very few of the most influential Venezuelans benefitted from this arrangement. Thats why Chavez came into being. |

I can't disagree with the major thrust of that statement 98, the Americans ran things to their own advantage.
Chavez ran things very much to his advantage, his backer was a man who owned a small insurance business and in 2014 held all the business accounts for Government insurance. Chavez turned his country into a police state, he crippled the economy and by supporting organisations like FARQ helped to destabilised the region. My source is an analyst of South American affairs for the insurance underwriters and most Brits would think of him as being soft left. |

Of course, must be the American's fault. Well, Maduro endorsed Bernie Sanders, who wants to do a similar thing to the states.
