Harriette Thompson, marathon runner in her 90s, an inspiration to all

Off in the downtown horizon, a little old lady was spotted, descending upon the parking lot adjacent to Petco Park. She was half jogging, half walking, a giddy-up to her step.“Holy moly,” a woman cried near the 2015 Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon finish line. “It’s Harriette!”
A phalanx of fans formed a runway for Harriette Thompson. She ran past them, lipstick in place, gleam in her eyes, smiling. When she crossed the finish line, purple confetti blasted skyward.
“I thought it was like Lindbergh coming in after his flight,” Thompson said minutes later.
At 92, Thompson, who lived in Charlotte, N.C., became the oldest woman to complete a marathon. Starting beneath gray clouds at 6:15 a.m. in Balboa Park, she finished 26.2 miles later in the mid-afternoon heat, clocked in 7 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds.
Last June, at 94, again in San Diego, after beating cancer for the third and fourth time, Thompson became the oldest woman to run a half-marathon.

I have interviewed Emerson Fittipaldi at the Indy 500 and Richard Petty at the Daytona 500. I’ve talked to Rod Laver, Martina Navratilova, Junior Seau, Joe Montana, Dennis Conner, Bill Walton, Arnold Palmer and Tony Gwynn. But for me, none was as memorable as Harriette Thompson.
In a sense, I became her Boswell, chronicling her feats of the past two years. We talked over breakfast at swanky downtown hotels where she was holed up by the Rock & Roll Marathon Series staff.
We talked for hours by phone. I cornered her at VIP events. We talked at the finish line, after the TV crews had grabbed their sound bites and exited. What impressed me the most wasn’t that she was running, then walking into her mid-90s.
It was the woman’s zest for life.
“If you’re smiling,” she once told me, “you can’t have a bad thought.”

Most sports teams (pro, college, amateur) have some version of a 'super fan' who attends games. San Diego State University just lost theirs.

Tom Ables attended nearly 800 SDSU football games and more than 1,000 SDSU basketball games over seven decades. He literally wrote the book on SDSU football, "Go Aztecs!" chronicling the team’s most memorable games through the years and highlighting the Aztecs’ best players and coaches.

The Aztecs' bowl streak stretched to six straight years with a 42-7 win over Cincinnati in the 2015 Hawaii Bowl victory over Cincinnati. That was the first SDSU game Ables ever watched on television. He had seen every game in person since TV was invented. An ear infection grounded Ables, preventing him from flying to Honolulu for the game.
Ables had attended his 600th straight SDSU game just a few weeks earlier when the Aztecs defeated Air Force 27-24 in the Mountain West Championship Game at Qualcomm Stadium.
