The first time I ever walked into an adult book store was in the spring of 1980 (my freshman year in college). It was in Des Moines, Iowa and the reason I bring that up was because the first person to greet me was a woman.

I discovered a sex shop in Sheffield UK, in 1985 that sold quality hardcore mags like Rodox etc for a reasonable price with a part exchange on return. They also did a good selection of vids (under the counter) again with discount for returned items. The first shop I went into was a private shop, it was in a nearby town and was tatty and in an area that was undesirable to say the least, it was pretty sparse inside and smelt of the guy behind the counter and stale fish and chips..... My wife is cool with my penchant for porn, and sometimes when visiting the UK would accompany me for short visits.

At one point an arbitrary rule was introduced by the Soho local council, that a shop with more than a certain percentage of smut would need planning permission - normally not granted. To get over this they would get racks of cheap second hand books and display then in the front to dilute the percentage. Often these would be the trashier types of chick-lit romance novels.

So, my wife, who has a low taste for such novels, goes "goody" and heads for the decoy racks and I head for the magazines. On checking out I had a couple of mags and she five or six Mills and Boon. It turns out that the owner had no idea at all what to do with the books, that nobody had ever tried to buy one, and was bemused that anybody would. So they ended up free and we were both happy.

When I used to visit porn shops, I preferred those where there was women on the desk. For some reason, I found it easier to buy stuff from women than men. Hard to explain why but for some reason I felt it was less embarrassing.

I remember that when I was visting porn shops for the first time in the 1980s you would only see male customers. At the time I also thought it was quite embarrassing if a woman would server me. What I liked best was a naughty glance by a male seller to show that he shared my taste.

But I am glad that things have changed. It is still a guys' thing, but you do some woman there. And lately I was served by a very friendly lady and didn't feel embarrassed at all.

I guess I somehow thought that if a woman works at porn shop, she is completely fine with it and therefore I didn't think it embarrassing at all. But when a man was serving there and would have commented on anything that I bought, I would have felt quite embarrassed, even if it was a positive comment.
