Well, can't speak for Oswald, but I mainly do it to give link stealers a hard time... a lot of the time they copy/paste the links and forget to include the pass in their new post. That has a tendency to upset the people who download them and cannot extract the file.

Also, if they do steal links and include the pass, there have been times when I've gotten them banned by reporting the posts as having stolen links.

How do you steal a "link"? I definitely understand what it means for someone
to steal a file I've shared, as the majority of what I've shared here has ended
up elsewhere uploaded to someone elses choice of file host........but links?
How and why would that be a bad thing, or at least bad enough to be banned
from VEF for? Taking what one's shared and uploading it to another file
host, helps to kill the link that it was originally downloaded from. Posting
the same link elsewhere, seems like it would help to keep it alive. Wouldn't it?

Yes, but it also leeches the bandwidth that the poster has paid for - and when the links are just posted to another board, it spreads the availability beyond the group that was chosen to share with. This is particularly true with filefactory, where a premium user can actually choose to share bandwidth with the first few free users to download. Personally, I only share stuff on here for the VEF members, and it ticks me off when I see my posts elsewhere. There was a board a while ago that ripped whole threads of VEF, links and all. Only the names were changed. Particularly with rapidshare, it made it damned near impossible for VEF members to download my content posts without a premium account . That's one reason I moved to Filefactory.

Of course it depends on the interest level for your content. I see your point about keeping links active - particularly with minority interests, but some of the stuff I have posted gets thousands of downloads. I suspect not all of those are VEF members.

It's called "stealing" because someone is taking links that I posted and putting them up on forums where I don't want them. This results in many cases is my links being reported and killed which means that I have to waste time replacing them. I could care less if they download the files, reup them to their own host and post them.... at least then they had to put in some effort.

As a copyright snooper once said to me a few years ago on a industry board
we go after the big thieves first - website strippers - and then everything thats nearby

You dont want your links posted anywhere near these sites especially given it only takes 1-2 downloads a month to keep a file alive

The only known defence going by what people have tried against these low lifes is to put highly visible competitor website addresses on the caps so their removed by their own forums staff.

Forum owners hate advertising of competitor sites

Effort comes from the person that took it from the DVD or tape it came from lol.
Anyone can upload. Guess it all depends on one's point of view, but to me,
posting a a link, associated with someone elses filehost account, is not
something I consider stealing, where taking the actual file that someone
extracted from a rare tape, uploading it to their own file host, in order
to make some pocket change, I consider making a "living", from my sweat.
Uploading is no effort though lol. The old saying, "no honor amongst thieves",
goes doubly in the sharing world for sure. lol

Does that guy still have a job? lol Whatever strategy they used hasn't
seemed to work too good has it? Not that I want them too succeed by
any means! It would flat out suck if everything that I ever uploaded to
share, would suddenly vanish.....(you know.....like any file on RS ultimately
does lol),
but for there to suddenly be nothing to download.......at all?....now that
would truly be devastating!

Ripping a DVD is cake really, the system does all the work once you have everything set up. Yeah, capping tapes is more time consuming but again the system does all the work.

Obviously you haven't had links reported multiple times over the span of several months. I have and it isn't fun trying to keep track of which links have been killed and wasting time re-uploading them time after time after time ad infinitum. I can't stop someone from making money off files I upload, but I can sure stop them from making me waste what little spare time I have replacing links over and over.....

You're right.......ripping dvd's, vhs tapes, Laserdiscs or what have you
aren't taxing physically at all. They are however.....taxing on one's wallet,
and it's much cheaper and easier for someone to steal someone elses efforts
than to run out and purchase their own to rip or transfer. Most of the stuff
that I share......doesn't come to me very cheap I promise you.

As far as replacing links go? lol I'll make a little wager with you, that I've
replaced and/or re-uploaded more files since I've been a member of VEF
than you've ever thought about uploading! lol Granted......not because of
things that have been reported......but from either file hosts wholesale
dumping of my files as well as many others (Rapidshare) a file host being
banned two weeks after I began using them, (File Serve) or a file hosts
overloaded aged servers crashing like a 500 car pile up on the Santa Monica
freeway, losing 1.5 TB of files in one fell swoop! (FF).

The fact of the matter....is that file hosts suck. Every dad gum one of them.
But.......as much as they suck....and I'd hope that you'd agree with me
on this Jenny....if we didn't enjoy sharing things with other folks like I know
we both do.....we'd never have a care in the world about file hosts, because
we'd both be doing something much less aggravating lol. I see your points
absolutely about someone stealing one's links, .....thanks for explaining
what you meant to me, it's just that with me......and what I share, the
folks that do the "stealing", have for the most part made me feel like I've
been working to help supplement their paychecks! lol
