I was scared to death the first time I walked up to the counter and asked for a copy of Playboy. After that it was always embarrassing because everytime I went into a store to buy one five or ten people would almost always get in line behind me. Thak God for jpegs

There used to be some great 'Adult Bookshops' in Manchester (uk) in the late 70's and 80's.
'Englands Glory' on Peter Street to name but one. Just the sheer excitement of entering these establishments was addictive, and costly!!! |

I remember buying a copy of loaded with Jo Guest on the cover when I was about 15 and the old Asian guy at the counter said "She is a very nice girl! Do you know she does the dirty magazines too!" He then spent two or three minutes telling me about the wide variety of magazines he had for sale where "the girls don't just show their boobs"

Hmm, I'm not sure mag buying has ever really been a turn on as such, but in the early days it definitely was a thrill. My first ones were at 15 and were surprisingly event-free despite my obvious nerves. After the next few I got more sophisticated and started selecting my magazines rather than my original trance-like "I am going to buy Mayfair" state. This tended to involve finding a shop with a big top shelf and where I could scan the shelf in peace without too much threat of being interrupted.
I would usually prefer being served by a woman though, because with a man there was always the possibility of him starting to talk about what I was buying - "look at the tits on her" - which I wasn't prepared for as a teenager! I just felt more comfortable with a woman, it was also quite good fun seeing her examine the cover looking for the price. Unless there was anyone behind me in the queue though I wouldn't volunteer any help. It was always fun when there was a particularly rude/sexy cover for one of the mags. The guy who served me for this issue of Just Girls looked at it for a second or two before scanning it and audibly inhaled in a 'my god she's nice' way. I also remember being particularly excited by what reaction I would get for this issue of Escort, but in the end there wasn't one. Probably the biggest 'turn on' I ever had was one day pretty early on in my porn buying career when I was looking for a new title to try. I was scanning the shelf when I heard someone enter the shop, so I lowered my glance until I could work out who it was. It was a mother and her son, who would have been not much older than me - 18 at most. She went straight for the top shelf and grabbed him a copy of one of the PRP titles - I think it was Club - and handed it to him and asked him if it was what he wanted. I remember being totally stunned and consciously moved a bit closer to them so I could see and hear what was happening. He didn't say much, then she grabbed another title and handed that to him too. He muttered something I couldn't hear, but he then said that they'd need to go to a sex shop to get what he wanted. This was around 2001 so hardcore had just become legal - so as far as I know (as they left the shop without buying anything) a guy my age got hardcore porn bought for him by his mother. I was so so so jealous. And continued with my mag purchase - as far as I am aware, I had a long scan and ended up with a particularly filthy issue of Escort - my first. I think I'd been inspired to get something a bit dirtier as my previous titles had been Mayfair and Club. Quote:
Pretty certain I've actually bought nine mags at a time from a petrol station actually - those six, plus Fiesta, Just 18 and Knave when I was trying out some other titles. I don't remember the reaction though. Then again, even after buying several hundred mags before, I was a little sheepish I must admit so perhaps I've blocked it out! |

What a great thread. Point the first. I was in the local WH Smiths - aged about 15, this was 1977 - when my Mum suggested buying a Mayfair for my Dad as a joke! I laughed but my brain said yes! yes! yes! ..in the hope that I might find it. (No, Dad did not have a stash).
Oh, and I loved Pharaoh's tale, as I grew up not very far from him. Anyhoo. I did look older than my years, a bit... which was an effing problem with the dentist who refused to accept I was still 'at school' and tried to charge me... (UK joke there). First time I bought a mag on my own. Mayfair, from local Smiths, 1978. Here's the sad side. I was an Army Cadet. So I put on my uniform...with no obviously ACF badges on... took down the Mayfair (Frances Voy on cover) and marched to the till with money in hand. Look cool, look cool... you've done it before (yeah, right).. Heart thumping, legs shaking, I'm not 18, I'm not 18... I got a quizzical grin and smile... 'Do you want a bag?' I think the 'yes' was a squeak.. thinking the mechanical bell by the till would go off, manager summonsed, berated publicly for buying it underage... But no! Bought... don't run, don't run... Look cool... Then when I went to university, Mum found my (limited, tame) stash and put them on a bonfire. No ranting, no raving.. they were just.. gone. Ah well, I was swapping Mayfair and Knave with a mate by then... but that 1978 Mayfair is a fond memory. ...of course, I only bought it for the articles.... |

I'd had mags given to me before I ever bought any myself, but the first time I ever did was in a tucked away newsagents that was never too busy, staffed by an asian guy who never said much. I used to hang around the magazines for far too long both trying to decide what one to get and worrying about being told I couldn't buy it etc...
After a while I think the guy got to recognise me as I went in there quite a few times to buy porn mags from him. One time, I was buying two mags, I think one of them was Penthouse, when two women came in and queued behind me. They must have been in early 30s maybe and I'm sure they noticed what I was buying and might have even made a comment about it, I wasn't sure. I hurried out of there quick after that but was kind of thrilled that they had seen it. Another time I had gone to a different shop, totally out of my normal area, and bought a copy of Playboy. I was served by a blonde woman who must have been late 20's probably. She was quite pretty, and I was a bit more nervous than usual about buying it from a woman but also a lot more excited. There seemed to be other staff around in the background, a man who looked like the boss. I started to panic a bit as the woman couldn't find the price on the cover and I didn't like the idea of her calling her boss over and making a spectacle out of this... She was panicking a bit too, and I got the impression she understood the dilemma, and she was also smiling. I quickly pointed out where the price tag was and that was that. I'm sure she seemed a little bit amused and even a little excited at selling it to me and it made the whole experience much more interesting But the best time was when I was staying with a friend for about a week. He lived in a smallish country area with a pretty small village centre where the shops were. I went in this newsagents a few times and noticed that on a couple of days it was being staffed by a young girl, probably the daughter of whoever owned the shop, most likely roped into working there over the holidays (it was coming up to christmas). I managed to slip away on my own for a while and went into the shop hoping she would be there. Sure enough, she was. Noone else in the shop, just this cute girl about my age, maybe a bit younger, looking bored. I looked through the porn mags feeling nervous and deliberately picked up the most rude looking one available to buy from her it was this... I went up and put it down in front of her and as soon as she saw it she immediately blushed and started giggling. I was extremely nervous and this point but very excited, but had a sudden onset of panic that she might call in her dad or whoever her boss was to check if I was allowed to buy it or not! (In retrospect, she would probably have been as embarrassed about that as I was). But she didn't, and took my money whilst smirking and giggling the whole time. |

here in the states the places to go used to be the newstand but they have since vanished...
i remember when my favorite place had a ton of porn, and i probably took me an hour to look through it all. the indian guys who owned the place didnt seem too appreciative of it. i was 13 also and theyd sell it to me. i had to bring it onto the railroad tracks and wank over there. i was so ashamed i used to throw the mag away. never will forget the time my friend caught me looking at porn in the same place, shit it was hard to j o back then, now INTERNET. very easy |

I never got any particular thrill from the transaction, as I was always mindful that the people standing in line behind me were probably wondering something about me. I usually bought the mags at a general book store or newsstand or convenience store and stuck with the mainstream fare since the more explicit stuff (Club, Hustler and their variants) didn't appeal to me.
In fact, I would generally be uncomfortable having to peruse the mags around people, so the majority of the time, unless it was an issue of PB or one of their NSS issues, it was almost always a blind buy. Sometimes I'd get clunkers, with mags where none of the models were appealing for a variety of reasons; other times I'd make new discoveries. I did get carded only one time. There this one chain bookstore where I was a semi-regular customer and this time, for wont of seeing something new, decided to get an issue of Genesis since it had some appealing models in it. The store manager probably thought PB and PH were OK for teens, but Genesis was getting into more adult territory (and this was long before that magazine got harder edged). However, I was 20 and in college, and she assumed I was in high school or something. So she asked from my ID, and I produced by drivers' license. She looked at that and me somewhat warily, as if it might be fake (it wasn't!) and rung it up. Looking back, I remember usually buying other merchandise with the magazine(s) so I wouldn't look like I was only interested in that one thing. That seems to the most common way guys will buy a girlie mag; they literally go grocery shopping, and the mag is like an afterthought. And I say that from both experience and, as I got older, observation. |

I was 14 when I started to help out in my Uncle's newsagents. I'd never seen porn before and was fascinated by it. I loved how glamourous the sets could be. I loved the top end magazines - mayfair and playboy - and I was always sneaking looks in the stock room when (i hope!) no one was watching. Ones like fiesta and razzle made me uncomfortable at the time. I thought it was dirty. Now I get that it was and it was supposed to be! I found it excruciatingly embarrasing to sell them though and would go bright red. Looking back I can't believe just how many guys used to wait till I was serving before they bought their stash. The dirty old pervs!
