Total War
I'm a fan of the Total War series in general, specifically Rome, Shogun, and Shogun 2, and today I'm celebrating. After at least one hundred attempts to win a Shogun 2 campaign on Legendary difficulty, I've finally managed to do it. Hurrah!

I just bought Wizardry 6 and 7 for US$5.99 at Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/) and expect to be installing them this evening. I have them played them, still have the discs but they're on some box in some stack somewhere in my apartment, probably DOS installs and for $3 each so much easier to just buy and download.

I have a few titles from GOG myself. The first three Thief's and several Lucas Arts. It's a great sight IMHO.

Oh I am pretty much on a mission to complete every GTA game. It is interesting to see some of the not so subtle differences though between the games of old versus some of the new games. There is seemingly so much effort by the big developers, UBISoft, EA, Activision etc. to turn their games into films that it almost feels like the game is built around the big finale cut scene. The hype around Call Of Duty Advanced Warfare was enormous suggesting that the line between a movie and a game was never closer except there seems to be this confusion between the CGI television and Youtube advertisement content, (that emulates game play that you will never see), and then the actual game play itself. COD AW is a terrible game on two fronts; first EVERYTHING you saw in the promotions did not exist in the game, second it is without a doubt the shortest content game of all of the Battlefield/COD franchise games to date. At some point the industry has to remember that it is selling a game not a movie.
Consider Gearbox putting HD promos out for Alien Colonial Marines and then when they released the game there was no HD content. How is that not fraud? Then the gaming world wonders why people pirate, (even though the study by the London School of Economics demonstrated that with respect to film and games piracy actually results in increased revenues... not sure if that model equally applies to music). To this day I still replay the original Command and Conquer and Starcraft and consider them two of the best examples of the RTS games ever made. The original Duke Nukems were tons of fun the last version was without a doubt one of the worst games every made. Fortunately Windows 8.1 is pretty good at going back in time and being able to manage older games and of course with companies like GOG tweaking the older tech to make them playable there are lots of classics available. Mind you my daughter still plays all sorts of games from the Nintendo 64 and up until it finally died five years back I was still using a Colecovision to play even older games. Hopefully the industry won't completely go down the "bigger is always better" road. |

Played Skyrim on the PS3 earlier today. It's crazy to know that this game is nearly 10 years old. Also playing Chase HQ on my Spectrum emulator. That game is nearly 32 years old😱.
