Default Jack McCloskey September 19, 1925 – June 1, 2017

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Jack McCloskey, General Manager for the Detroit Pistons from 1979 to 1992 and architect of the Bad Boys’ two NBA Championship teams, passed away Thursday afternoon in Savannah, Georgia at the age of 91. The Detroit Pistons organization sends its thoughts and prayers to Jack's wife, Leslie, and the entire McCloskey family.

McCloskey, nicknamed "Trader Jack" for his many astute trades during his tenure as the clubs' GM, assembled the Pistons' teams which brought two NBA Championships to Detroit in 1989 and 1990. His teams made nine straight playoff appearances (1984-92), five straight trips to the Eastern Conference Finals, three NBA Finals appearances and those two championships. He was honored by the club on March 29, 2008 with a retirement ceremony where his name was lifted to the rafters among the franchise's greats.

Good riddance and it's sheer understatement ! May he rot in hell with Augusto Pinochet and Jorge Rafael Videla.

Default Surf wetsuit pioneer O'Neill dies

Jack O'Neill, the pioneering US surfer and designer, has died aged 94. He passed away peacefully at his seaside home in Santa Cruz, California, with his family by his side, O'Neill's friends told KSBW news. He opened his first surf shop in San Francisco in 1952, and popularised the use of the neoprene wetsuit for coldwater surfing. His firm grew to become one of the world's biggest surf wear brands. His son took over the business in 1985. In an interview in 2011, Mr O'Neill said: "Surfing for me was a very important part of my life. I'd work downtown in San Francisco and I'd get all screwed up, and I'd go out and I'd jump in the ocean and everything would be all right again. "All I wanted to do was surf, and when I opened that shop in my garage, I thought I would have a few guys there to sell suits and have guys to surf with. "One of the guys up there told me: 'O'Neill, you are going to sell to the five guys on the beach and you are going to be out of business.' "Nobody is more surprised than I am about how this business has grown," Mr O'Neill said.

After working as a pilot in Naval Air Corps in the 1940s, he moved to San Francisco and joined a hardy group of coldwater surfers at Ocean Beach. There he started experimenting with neoprene, a material already being used in the US Navy. He went to surplus stores and started sewing pieces of material into vests, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Later, this idea grew to become the full-body suit that made his name. Although he is not credited as the wetsuit inventor, he was one of the pioneers of the neoprene version, which transformed the sport. In the early 1970s, he lost the sight in his left eye while testing one of the first prototypes for a surfboard leash, and afterwards wore a characteristic eye patch. The ocean-lover was known to be a private man and rarely spoke to the press. "O'Neill was one of the least-known, and least-talked-about titans of the surf world," read his obituary in Surfer magazine. He said his proudest achievement was the Sea Odyssey programme, which introduced schoolchildren to marine conservation.

Default Conductor Sir Jeffrey Tate dies at 74

The respected classical conductor Sir Jeffrey Tate has died at the age of 74, his agency has confirmed. Sir Jeffrey, who was born with spina bifida, was the principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Opera House in the 1980s. He recently worked in Germany and was knighted in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to British music overseas. Sir Jeffrey, who had curvature of the spine and a paralysed left leg, would conduct while sitting on a tall stool. He has featured as a guest conductor with almost every major orchestra and opera house in the world. Since 2007, Sir Jeffrey has been the chief conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and is recognised as one of the foremost interpreters of German music. He received his knighthood from Prince William at an investiture ceremony in London on 19 April.

Sir Jeffrey, who went to school in Farnham in Surrey, turned to conducting at 27 - after studying medicine at Cambridge and beginning training as a doctor at St Thomas' Hospital in London. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs in 1989, he said his conducting career came "purely by accident". He began musical training at the Royal Opera House in the 1970s. He made his conducting debut in 1978 with the opera Carmen at the Gothenburg Opera in Sweden. By 1986, he was principal conductor at the Royal Opera House, where he recorded extensively. Sir Jeffrey told Radio 4 the course of his career was surprising -since he sometimes "loathed" opera.

"I used to go to Covent Garden and wonder why the singers were never with the beat, always sang out of tune, and why the productions looked so horrible and I'd much rather go to the Royal Shakespeare Company," he said. "But when it works it's the most wonderful thing in the world." He added: "Maybe I've got the wanderlust inside me, that I perhaps will never actually feel I am at home in any one thing." Sir Jeffrey, who has been president of the UK spina bifida charity Shine since 1989, also spoke of feeling self-conscious performing with a disability. "I always feel a bit sort of odd walking in front of all those people," he said.

"I used to rush on, I suppose out of fear, and once in fact fell down." On his first appearance at Cologne opera house, he recalls rushing to the podium: "I in fact slipped on the first step and fell into the arms of the viola player, and of course it took me about half an hour to recover from that. "I learnt a savage lesson from that - despite feeling nervous and self-conscious that I have to walk very, very slowly." But he told Radio 4 that he had got "jolly used" to sitting on a stool. "Occasionally I stand up, and that is an advantage, because if you do stand up occasionally, you can produce an effect." "There is in the last resort no limit to my physical energy if I know what I'm doing and want to do it," he said.

A lot is written about cat lovers and how some are madder than a bag of mice...on speed! but we forget how much of an impact an animal of any sort can have on family life. I can genuinely see how a cat can, like a family member, be a tremendous loss on a family or individual. I do hope he didn't suffer and I wish you well my friend.
