Actually it looks like they shifted from using the previous year to the upcoming year.

In Dec. 1985 they put this in the "Coming in January" blurb:

That is a full-page scan exactly as it appeared in the magazine. Since I wasn't there to stage the props you'll have to take up her partially obstructed head with the photographer. Please don't ask me to separate pictures within a page again because I won't do it. Chances are your computer came with some basic photo editing capability such as Windows Picture Manager. If not, there are plenty of freebies available for download so you can do it yourself.

I was curious about the different looks many women, including the Penthouse Pets, have depending on makeup and lighting. Here's a few shots of Sylvia Saint that shows what I am talking about:

She looks alot 'softer' facially, even with the makeup, than in other sets I've seen of her. It's tough to describe but it doesn't look like an actual clear photo of her, like there's some lense or something giving an overall yellowish glow to her and the layout. Other shots of her look like someone took it with a straight digital camera but these and other layouts look different -- is it my imagination, the lens, a filter, Photoshop touching up, what ?

Alot of the POTY layouts had that look -- where the pictures aren't super-sharp but almost painting-like -- does anybody know how they do that ?

Since Sarah Remington Greaves is a hot topic lately here she is in all her POM glory. This set is from the January 1986 US edition pages 83-115* and is entitled 'Anything Goes'.

*The centerfold is actually pages 98 and 115. There was a folded-up Madonna poster inserted to which the editors assigned page numbers (99-114).
