City of Hope (1991)
Trailer Nick Rinaldi (Vincent Spano) is a twentyish guy from a fictional New Jersey city who is tired of living in the shadow of his "war hero" brother who died serving with the Marines and his father greasing the wheels for him. He quits the contractor's job provided by his father, convinced that he's about to move forward in life on his own. Meanwhile, the city is floating in corruption and facing problems with funding of public education, accompanied by increasing racial tensions. John Sayles is among my favorite modern American directors. City of Hope is a gritty inner-city film about real people and real issues. A remarkable modern urban tale. |

Was late coming to this film because last year somebody who`d seen it told me which characters died. No don't ask me why. As I`d specifically made clear that I hadn't seen it yet and didn't want any spoilers. But then who gives away spoilers to movies Unless you know the other person has seen it you can't discuss it. Seriously I said don't tell me anything. So how did that translate in his nogging into "Tell me who lives at the end" Annnnyway Hopefully everybody here has watched it already Because although I found it entertaining enough (Despite practically no characterisation) there were an awful lot of things that didn't make bloody sense. Such as if this was predominately a revenge tale why didn't they take the fight to Mr Baddie who was weakly guarded at the time. As you cut the head off that snake and game over. So strike first. Rather than wait for him to gather an army and attack. Having to then defend a town that`s not worth saving and impossible to properly hold off a hundred or so men.. If they`d done this then more time could have been spent getting to know this magnificent seven. Give them all a backstory so we give a shit when a percentage die. As it was when they did die it moved me as much as one of the unnamed townsfolk dying. Also if Mr Baddie had a Gatling gun seemingly able to decimate everything in it`s path how come he didn't use that first to at least soften the town up. Yeah and what was the point of one of the seven leaving to then return and do, bugger all ?. Sure I know you can say the whole story is about seven protecting a town. But considering the budget and a chance to make something different I feel they really dropped the ball. Definitely if you place the budget this had against a film like Bone Tomahawk and what S. Craig Zahler managed to achieve. Both in developing characters plus sense of story. I'm now checking out the American (As opposed to the true Japanese original) original. Haven't seen in it many years. Finding it as superb as I remember

Killer Crocodile (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0143338/ An environmentalist action group is on a trip up a swamp investigating illegal waste dumping. Lots of Jaws rip off scenes and Sherrie Rose appears in one of her earliest roles. The title pretty much gives most of the "plot" away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=559dVJXPnI8

It Stains the Sands Red (2016)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5735280/ The blurb on imdb for this film made me want to see it. In the throes of a zombie apocalypse, a troubled woman from Las Vegas with a dark past finds herself stranded in the desert with a lone and ravenous zombie on her tail. I thought how the hell could that sustain a movie, a woman being stalked by a zombie in a desert !! Is that it ??? What a bloody good film though, Molly is travelling with her boyfriend to meet with friends at an airport to hopefully fly to safety, their car gets stuck by the side of the road and they find themselves trapped in the car by a lone zombie, I'll not expand too much but suffice to say Molly ends up alone heading towards the meeting place on foot whilst her decaying friend is following her. Great performances by Brittany Allen as Molly and Juan Riedinger as Smalls, the zombie. It's unlike any other zombie film you may see so give it a chance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zv0UXpfFX4g

Ninja Scroll (1993)
Trailer Jubei is a vagrant samurai who gets drawn into a conflict with a group of demons who work for the sinister "Shogun of the Dark". Our hero saves a female ninja who works for the local Yamashiro clan, thus drawing the attention of the aforementioned demon bunch. Their plan is to steal huge amounts of gold in order to topple the government in power, the Tokugawa shogunate. Old school anime with a simple plot, lots of blood and infantile fantasies. But the animation itself is top-notch. |

Super Shark (2011)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1698008/ "Where there's one shark there's usually another" An undersea drilling rig breaks through the surface freeing a prehistoric shark from it's long hidden home. Sound familiar to anyone? Unbelievably amateur CGI effects, lots of women in bikini's a military tank that can walk and a shark that can walk on land. It's so bad it's magnificent in its ineptutude https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rx2cTYCP0Ns
