Big Grin Male Impersonator: Ella Shields

Ella Shields was a music hall singer and male-impersonator. Her famous signature song, "Burlington Bertie from Bow", was an immediate hit that and though American-born, Ella achieved her greatest success in England.

The Depression brought rocky times for many entertainers, and Shields was no exception. (She spent time working a Macy's jewellery counter in New York.) After a bout of performing in obscurity, a music-hall reunion show called Thanks for the Memory put "Bertie" back in the spotlight.

In August 1952, the then septuagenarian Shields, was still performing in northern England. Needing money, the elderly Ella Shields was reduced to working in holiday camps, and died in one in Morecambe in 1952, but true to her nature her death was dramatic. Singing her trademark song, in what would be her final show, instead of the traditional opening lines 'I'm Burlington Bertie', she began with 'I was Burlington Bertie'. After finishing the song she collapsed on stage and died three days later, without regaining consciousness .... what a trouper!

Of course her gender bending, was mildly scandalous for the time, and attracted notoriety as much as fame, however Ms Shields wasn't the only such entertainer with Vesta Tilley a famous contemporary performer (who spookily also died in 1952).

However its her very public, very messy divorce from William Hargreaves in 1923, which created the scandal of her life. She said in court that until her husband deserted her she had lived 'a life of horror'. He had acted towards her 'like a brute' (which was usually newspaper shorthand for 'marital rape').

However under questioning she admitted that after Mr Hargreaves left in 1916 (because she refused to give him money anymore), she had 'succumbed to the charms of a certain [married] Colonel Christie', but she added that two years later in 1918, she had realised that the association was 'absolutely wrong' (probably meaning he wasn't going to divorce his wife) and ceased to see him.

The judge said that had Mr Hargreaves bothered to contest the divorce, then he would have taken Ms Shields infidelity into account as mitigation, but as it was he was obliged to exercise his discretion in favour of Ms Shields.

The divorce was big news at the time across the Empire ....

There is a video of her performing 'Burlington Bertie' viewable here

Default US Model/Reality Actress: Jennifer Toof (part 1)

Jennifer 'Toasteee' Toof is living proof that they do get worse. Sha also appeared on 'Flavor of Love 2' like Shay "Buckeey" Johnson. After that show, she appeared on 'Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School' and 'I Love Money'.... she has her own 'official' VH1 facebook page which they must regret.

They must buy these wannabees wholesale on trailer parks!

Anyway she tried to do the 'one night in Paris' thing and record a sex tape .... but with much the same results as good ol 'buckeey'..... slapper stardom beckoned.... however she appears to have jumped the gun by doing porn stuff under the name 'Natalia - the scissor vixen'.

She also appears to be something of a gymnast

Default Radio Star: Ethel Shutta

Going back to an age when female 'stars' knew what their knickers were for, Ethel Shutta was a big star with her husband band-leader George Olsen.

They appeared in clubs across the country, and were regulars on Jack Benny Canada Dry Radio Show. After they divorced in 1936, she continued to work on her own as a singer, with reasonable success until her return to Broadway return in the flop 'Jennie' in 1963.

Work dried up for a long time after this (apart from one movie role), and Shutta developed a reputation for alcohol dependency during this period .... however just when it looked as though her end story would be written in alcohol, she got a late career break in the Broadway production of 'Follies' in 1971 and ended her career with a success. So a story with a redemptive ending for a change.

Default Actress: Ellen Terry

English stage actress Ellen Terry began acting as a child in Shakespeare plays and continued as a teen, in London and on tour.

Her private life was public, and as well as being married three times Terry well involved in numerous relationships.

Aged 16 she married the much older artist George Frederick Watts (they had started a relationship earlier than that when she started posing for him in her early teens).

They seperated inside a year, and she began a relationship with the architect Edward William Godwin and retired from the stage for six years as his mistress, while she was still married to Watts. She did not finalize a divorce until 1877 – and their open relationship was a scandalous one for the times. With Godwin she had one daughter (Edith Ailsa Geraldine Craig), and a son (Edward Gordon Craig), the surname Craig was chosen to avoid the open stigma of illegitimacy.

In 1878 she joined Henry Irving's company as his leading lady, and for more than the next two decades she was considered the leading Shakespearean and comic actress in Britain, especially while in acting partnership with Sir Henry Irving. Terry stated later that she and Irving had been lovers and that: "We were terribly in love for a while". As usual Irving was separated, but not divorced from his wife, so yet another semi public scandal.

In 1907 Ellen married American James Carew, Who had appeared with her at the Court Theatre. She was thirty years older than Carew, but her marriage broke up after only two years.

She continued to find acting success until 1920, while also appearing in films until 1922. Her career lasted nearly seven decades.

Big Grin Samba Singer: Carmen Miranda

Carmen Miranda was a Portuguese/Brazilian Broadway star and Samba singer of the 1940's and 50's .... she was just ethnic enough to be 'exotic' in segregated America. She was, by some accounts, for a period of time the highest-earning woman in the United States, and was known for her signature 'fruit hat outfit', that she first wore in the 1943 movie 'The Gang's All Here'.

In 1947 she married a failed American movie producer, David Sebastian, although her family disapproved. He soon declared himself to be her "manager" and was responsible for many bad business deals. A heavy drinker, he got Miranda into drinking as well, and this is contributed to her later health problems. In 1948 she became pregnant, but suffered a miscarriage after a show as she had carried on her act. A few months later they separated but Carmen had acquired a reliance on Alcohol.... she sometimes forgot her underwear

Her sister Aurora later would state in the documentary 'Bananas is My Business' that "he was very rude, many times even hit her. The marriage was a burden in her life; he only married her for her money. He did not like our family" ..... In the later years of her life, Miranda began taking amphetamines and barbiturates, all of which took a heavy toll on her body.

Miranda suffered a heart attack during a segment of the live TV show The Jimmy Durante Show in 1955, and second fatal one later that night. She was buried in Brazil to national mourning, this was a reconciliation of sorts as she had fallen out with critics in her 'homeland' some 14 yrs earlier.

Some pictures here ...loads on the web.

No mention of Aylar Dianati Lie (aka Diana)? She was a Miss Norway contestant who did a few X-rated flicks before the pageant.

As you have already linked to her post on this site, and given away the storyline (so to speak) you will have to admit that theres little point in me posting it again. So as she's already covered photographically quite extensively there, and you have mentioned her, here are some more pictures of her, which are just tasters for the kinds of delights available on her linked thread above.

Default Burlesque Star: Lydia Thompson

Lydia Thompson was an English dancer, actress and theatrical producer who was credited with the introduction of burlesque to America in 1868 to great acclaim and notoriety.

She started in England and became famous here before taking her risque art form to the US after touring Europe to great acclaim."for the dexterity of her dancing – which included the Highland Fling and Hornpipe – as well as the charms of her person and the vivacity of her character." Thompson had married John Christian Tilbury, a riding-master, in 1863 but he died in a riding accident .... in 1868 she married Alexander Henderson before heading to the US as part of the troupe the "British Blondes". They were a success.

But, and there's always always a but on this thread, there was also fierce criticism from those who felt it transgressed the boundaries of propriety. Criticism reflecting on the virtue of her dancers by Wilbur F. Storey, the owner of the Chicago Times, led Thompson and her troupe first to post notices calling Storey "a liar and a coward" and appealing for the sympathy of the audiences.

Then, on 24 February 1870, Thompson, her husband and her colleague, Pauline Markham, horsewhipped Storey at gunpoint, for which they were arrested and fined. Thompson told a reporter that Storey "had called her by the most odious epithet that could be applied to a woman, and she could stand it no longer. She was glad at what she had done." And in direct proof that any publicity is good publicity, this resulted in more publicity and popularity for the troupe.

Other actresses were less sympathetic to Lydia, actress Olive Logan protested, "I cannot advise any woman to go upon the stage with the demoralizing influence which seems here to prevail more every day, when its greatest rewards are won by brazen-faced, stained, yellow-haired, padded-limbed creatures (Lydia), while actresses of the old school – well trained, decent – cannot earn a living."

In the following years, Thompson returned to America several times, where she remained popular. Thompson separated from Henderson, but the two continued to work together into the 1880s. Her career began to decline, and her last American performances were in 1894 and similarly in London she had depleted her funds, and a London benefit night had to be held for her by 1899.
