Alcohol
Having just read the biog... "Hellraisers"... Im beginning to wonder just what is alcohol and how does it affect the brain.
Just why does it have such a hold on so many people ... esp in the UK ! In the book we follow the wild hellraising lives of four famous actors .... Peter O Toole..... Richard Burton.... Richard Harris and Ollie Reed. The hectic lives of all four of them seem to have been fueled by alcohol. Richard Burton famously married Elizabeth Taylor who was herself a hard drinker with an awesome capacity for alcohol.... they travelled the world by private jet, Richard spent millions on expensive jewellry for his glamorous, voluptious wife... they seemed to have it all. In the 50's doing plays in Bristol..Peter O'Toole would disappear to the pub in the interval.. knock back a few vodkas and then race back to the theatre to be just on time for his cue. The alcohol intake of these guys was phenomenal... yet they all had brilliantly successful careers both in the theatre and in the movies. Sadly their hellraising years of excessive drinking in the end caught up with them Burton died at age ... 58 Ollie died at age 61 Burton once said..." I spend 1/3 of my life drunk.... 1/3 of my life with a hang over and 1/3 of my life asleep !" In the UK the consumption of alcohol goes up and up and binge drinking is said to be the main cause of violence and disorder in city centres. There seems to be no end to the fascination that alcohol has for the British society. But what exactly does alcohol do ? is there some part of the brain that it stimulates or excites ? Yeast gets to work on some sugar in a liquid and produces alcohol.......the magic ingredient of wines, spirits and beers.... seems like we just cant get enough of it ! |

Hell yes i`m drunk at 4pm , want to make something of it !
We can`t get enough of it over here because this lousy nation is full of unhappy overtaxed overworked underpaid .......... idiots too worried about missing the latest episode of Eastbenders to risk going onto the streets to protest for fear they`ll get arrested.
Which is why i left this country. Just don`t ask me why i returned as it`ll make me sound even more stupid than my fellow softly complaining (In case anybody hears) countrymen Telling you how we mugs ever once ruled three quarters of the globe i`ll never know Guess it was thanks to the Irish , Scotch and Welsh Because if it had been left up to the English they wouldn`t have even ruled their own bath water

I love alcohol, and alcohol seems to love me, too.
It's the longest-lasting relationship I've ever had.

Anyone ever heard of this guy, Bill W? He and a doctor friend of his formulated a pretty good plan; one that's worked for me for 13 years. Google him.

a very respecable thread.........
This is a worldwide problem I think.
After a lot of experiencies in using nearly the complete spectrum of legal and illegal drugs sold in the late 60's, in the 70's till the late 80's, I found myself beeing an alcoholic. I think, it's the most dangerous, the most underhand and most backbreaking drug existing on earth. Never forget the the destroying successions for the culture and self-confidence of the American natives! This is the fate for everyone. My fight against one of my seriousts problems has lasted now for 17 years. After 7 years of Abstinence I thougt to be able of controlled drinking again. That costs me again 6 years. Now I'm really satisfied to stay clean again for the last 4 years. All the Alcohol I had to drink in this live, I've been drinking. .......and some pints and liquors more. Toi, toi toi. I'm pleased for everyone who can handle this for a long time. Good Luck. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a member of the Salvation Army. Last edited by Hippie4ever; January 28th, 2012 at 01:56 PM.. |

Alcohol doesn't do anything for me and I have never been a drinker. - I've always liked myself so much that I've got no need to resort to booze to improve my self-esteem.

Ah but you don`t need to drink ,as you take the edge off by smoking enough to make even an industrial chimney choke. By the way typing personally for myself , i don`t drink at the weekend to improve my self-esteem. I drink to forget it completely |
