Forget the girls. The dumbest thing I did was start smoking. Damn, it was hard to quit, and quit, and quit again. It took years to get unhooked.

I have long been intrigued by the claim, attributed to Socrates, that the "...unexamined life is not worth living." Good to look back on the choices we all made but I am sure we had good reasons or rationalizations at the time.

I long ago reached the conclusion that given who I am and where I came from, I really did do the best that I could. In my better moments I also accept that everyone else is trying their best. Experience and wisdom come from fucking up repeatedly. (Or maybe it's from repeatedly fucking psycho bitches. Your life turns into a mess, but at least the sex was intense.)

I am in the same boat there.

I would've dropped out my senior year and joined the U.S. Navy.

It's good to know things and see life from another's perspective, but sometimes you have to just do, if that makes any sense.

I had a lot of great teachers and coaches and appreciate their contributions to my life. But I felt my time could've been best utilized elsewhere.

I know war and the service isn't wine and roses, but at least I would've built a resume and got some real-life experience.

To each, his/her own!

My family knows a young lady kind of like you? Yeah, she should have gone straight into the Navy. She made the decision to party in high school, barely graduated, then took her partying habits to college, where she flunked out the fall of her first year. But she saw what the partying lifestyle was doing to her and joined the Navy to get some real life experience and discipline. She did great and the Navy kept its end of the deal to her. She used her GI Bill once she finished her enlistment and is now in nursing school. She's going to do great in life. All of us love her like we always have, and all of us are proud of her too now. Sometimes the dumb decisions set up the great ones!

Good judgment comes from bad experience which comes from bad judgment.
