Lolita: Adrian Lyne's 1997 version of Nabokov's tale of a man's (Jeremy Irons) obsession with a precocious, tomboyish 14 year old nymphet (Dominique Swain). Obviously a lot sultrier than the 1962 version. I liked this one better all around. And Dominique Swain was excellent, not just as a cock tease but as an actress. She was 15 at the time. (Yes, body doubles were used). 7.0
Iron Man 3: It's predictable and a bit disappointing in spots but overall still very good and as always with Robert Downey Jr, very entertaining. 6.5 The Host: Not the excellent 2006 Korean horror movie but another teen supernatural movie based on books from Twilight author Stephanie Meyer. Aliens have invade Earth, taking over the humans' bodies and souls. One girl decides to resist her "host" to where they both exist as part of the same consciousness and fight back. It's obviously geared toward teen girls since those are the main consumers of Meyer's books. They could have saved money and made it into a tv movie on a teen channel like the CW next to Vampire Diaries. Avoid. 4.0 |

An unusual film on Sky arts at the moment. Night mail, it was made by the GPO film u and its about the London-Glasgow mail train. Commentary was written by W H Auden, music by Benjamin Britten.

Oblivion (2013)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483013/ One of the better sci-fi entries in recent years. Dare I say Cruise's films have rarely disappointed me. |

---------------- "Cruise's films have rarely disappointed me." I agree. ________________________ Drugstore Cowboy (1989) This played a lot better when I first watched it 20 years back.. And Matt Dillon's acting is laughable.. A grossly over-rated film. IMDb rating 7.3 Maybe a 5.5, only because of William S. Burroughs' appearance. |

Just saw action-dark comedy, Pain and Gain with The Rock, Ed Harris and Mark Wahlberg. Good watch! Hard to believe it is based on a true story but it is. Also recently saw, That's What I Am with Ed Harris good watch too.

Over the weekend I went to see:
AFTER EARTH(2013) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1815862/ Starring Will Smith and his son Jaden. It has a number of other actors in it but they really don't matter. This movie is a vehicle for Will Smith and his son. Mostly his son. Will Smith's character is a larger than life/superstar hero and Jaden's character is struggling in his shadow (art reflecting life?). The Fresh Prince takes his son on his final mission where there is a serious accident and it is left to the son to save the day and his father's life. The dialogue was a bit monotone and stunted. The action scenes were decent but overall the movie was very predictable. I won't say the movie was boring (as some critics have) but there really wasn't all that much to hold the interest or make it a "must see". I won't say this movie is disapointing as I really wasn't expecting that much. There are many inconsistancies in the movie regarding science, history, etc... but I will leave that alone. |
