Hef ruined it years ago when he tried to make every Playmate a clone of Barbie.
When's the last time you bought a Playboy? I think mine was about 1982? |

Of course, compared to the 2015 version of Playboy, 2005 seems like a golden age. |

Reality is that it's been dying anyway and if they don't do something drastic to change direction, it's only a matter of time.
Will this save them? I doubt it. Apparently the idea is to attract a younger audience, since what's left of their base is aging which doesn't help with getting advertisers who tend to prefer the 20-40 demographic. Naked women aren't bringing in the subscribers or the news stand sales anymore. There's too much competition and too much of it is free. Apparently their web site has been non-nude for a while now and the average age of the visitors has been going down. I think it's just too late. The market has changed too much. All they've got left is the articles and the type of articles they do has too much competition as well. |

Playboy had a good run, but what it offers hasn't been unique for several decades. Along with too many competitors, the internet has cut deeply into the magazine's readership. Although I think that Hefner's decision to remove the nudity is a drastic step to reverse the trend, I believe it will actually turn out to be the first step in the eventual collapse of the magazine.

There used to be a thread here on VEF titled "How would you save Playboy" As near as I can remember, none of the suggestions were " get rid of the naked women". So, I don't think it becomes Maxim, but more like Esquire, which is the mag Hef wanted to imitate BITD.
For me, it wasn't the photography, it was the models. they all looked the same, with the same plastic boobs, and the current tread of shaving off girl's pubic hair. certainly did not help. Perhaps, in the turnabout is fair play department, the last nude centerfold should be Hef himself. That would surely put the airbrushers at Playboy to the test! Maybe he could effect one of those "coy" poses, arching his back whilst biting his fingernail, like so many Playmates did. He certainly did not hesitate to put his GF's and wife in the mag, and while it certainly would not make that issue a best seller, it would be one hell of a publicity stunt. This is just another example of modern society consistently cutting the balls off of straight men and forcing us to go further and further underground. EVERYTHING men have HAS to be "all inclusive" but no other special interest group has to return the favor.
Now I am looking forward to Playboy's demise more than ever, it can't come soon enough. |

Lot's of questions:
1. The international editions are some sort of franchise license deal. Are they going to still have nude girls? 2. The international editions occasionally feature American Playmates. Will they be nude? 3. Will the online PlayboyPlus still have nude photos and videos of Playmates? I remember 30 years ago, or so, the magazine had several pages of a parody of what a Soviet Russian edition would look like. It seems that the tables have turned. Anybody have a link to that parody? |
