The idea of class is wirely misunderstood. The "working class" that Karl Marx wrote about really doesn'r exist any more. A farm labourer these days sits in an air conditioned cab with air conditioning and the stereo on.
You were said to become middle class once you opened a bank account or went on holiday abroad , you got a job not involving manual labour and so on. Remarkably many people who a few decades ago would have been firmly considered middle class persist in seeing themselves as working class.
I recall John Prescott interviewing two girls and asked them "Do you consider yourselves working class ? When they said "No" he asked why. "Because we don't work"

It has been said that the definition of middle class is one who gets out of the bath for a piss.

Someone once told me that working class people had to wash their hands before going to the loo.

According to your definition, someone who types on a keyboard that is shared by several people can be considered from the working class. Because it's healthier for him to wash his hands after having used the computer.

According what I understood, the proletariat described by Marx were people who worked in a process in which they had to follow the rhythm of the machines or a flow.
There are still people who are proletarian in the industry.
Today proletarian mainly are in Asia.

If you go on a work or building site, the majority of the workers are from the working class.
If you don't work, in our society, you are from the elite, the poors or... the gangsters .
Elites and gangsters chose their life... but rarely not poors.

Own their own home
Are older
Tend to mix socially with people similar to themselves
I've made the test. Me too.

But you can own a house thanks a heritage.
I never earned enough money to buy my own house.

My father came from a working class background but, having flown fighters in WWII, was clear that he would never tug his forelock to any man. He had "done his bit" and believed himself to be an equal citizen to all others. That was the spirit abroad in '45 and the closest Britain ever got to an equal...ish society.

Likewise he taught me never to judge anyone by their perceived class but to look to the real person. "Dustman or duchess - treat them all alike" was his adage. I carried that into my professional life where I could be rubbing shoulders with landed gentry one minute and tenant farmers the next.

I loathe the notion of class, monarchy, titles etc. Everyone has a valuable role to play in society. In recent years it has become lamentably distorted - and I blame conservative politics for that. But then I would being a Guardian-reading, left-leaning, London-dwelling, liberal...wouldn't I?

God bless you Dad.

I can understand your view point since the Scots are a third tier people most of the time so it makes sense for you to be grabbing at anything to be able to make yourself feel better.
Just saying.

"Third Tier" ? Third best is not bad! Deep down the whole world knows that to be British [ and especially to be Scottish] is to have won first prize in the lottery of life.
