But, actually, they are heated!

The um ... "stuff" flowing in the drains below is much warmer than the freezing point of snow and because it is constantly churning as it moves it releases lots of heat, which heats the air above the "stuff", which heats the drain covers.

Where I live, we don't usually see the drain covers themselves from about November to March because there is too much snow and ice to melt (and the temperature of the ice and snow is far to cold to melt easily). However, the holes or slots in the drains are almost always free of obstruction and we can see steam wafting up to the street.

I hope that helps,

Question How about this one for a chance....

The Bermuda Triangle
The Bermuda Triangle has been the talk of many for a long time.
She has become famous due to the many aircraft and countless disappearances of ships within
her boundaries that form a huge triangle.
From 1492 to 2001 on over 170 ships, boats, planes and other disappeared

No one knows what happened to the planes and boats.
When some enter the waters of the triangle they disappear forever.

Of course, a few unusual incidents in a 500,000sq mile area wouldn't make for much of a mystery, so anything and everything which happens inside the triangle is added to the score ... even when there's a blindingly obvious reason!

A few examples often listed ...
In 1966 the "Southern Cities" was lost without a trace! (She happened to be a harbour tug, designed for use in sheltered waters only, so was totally unsuited to the open seas ... far less when there was a 40mph wind and seas of around 13 ft!)
In 1993 the 40ft ketch Charley's Crab disappeared without a trace! (There just happened to be 70mph winds and 30ft seas at the time!)
In 1999, the shrimp trawler Miss Fernandina disappeared without trace (having previously reported that her nets had become entangled in her propeller, she had electrical problems, and was already listing.)
In 2001, Comair flight 5054 suddenly rolled and dived steeply! (after ice built up on the wing!)

Even "Flight 19" is open to debate, and in any case, literally thousands of aircrew have been lost on training exercises ... nowhere near the Bermuda Triangle!

Flight leader Lt Taylor got lost. It's as simple as that. He got disoriented and thought, for some bizarre reason, that they were somehow in the Florida Keys, so all they had to do was fly north and they'd be back in Florida. The fact that their radio signals got weaker proves they were actually flying over the Atlantic and farther away from the coast. Because he was disoriented and thought he was elsewhere, he believed that his instruments were therefore not working properly (it seems Lt Taylor had gotten lost on flights before)... they were not being affected by some strange force in the Bermuda Triangle! And the so-called final transmission, "Don't come after me, it looks like they're from outer space!" is pure fiction; it never happened. Even the disappearance of the Martin Mariner that was dispatched to look for Flight 19 is easily explained: it's called a "flying gas tank" for a reason. The tanks obviously exploded and destroyed the plane, which accounts for the explosion seen by the crew of the SS Gaines Mill that night.

The only thing mysterious about the Bermuda Triangle is that people still believe that there is something mysterious about it! And yes, I once believed there was something strange about the place, but when serious researchers investigated and got to the facts of the various disappearances, especially that of Flight 19, it became obvious that it was all nothing but hype designed to sell books and magazines.

The sad part about it all is that the other pilots knew precisely where they were (based on transmissions between the planes picked up at base) and said that all they had to do was fly west and they'd be home. But Taylor, the guy who had a habit of getting lost in the air, wasn't interested in listening to the students he was in charge of.

Thanks for the the summary of Flight 19, Extempus. In my posting, I said it was "open to debate" as I recalled a TV programme describing what happened, but I didn't have all the facts. Your comments summarise the events very neatly!

It frustrates me when there's a perfectly rational explanation available, but people still want to believe that little green men are wandering about causing chaos! (Not having a go at you, Nevermind, as you never claimed it had anthing to do with alien abductions, and I enjoy your thread and it does open up some interesting points.)

I thought the Bermuda Triangle issue had been resolved. I don't recall the man's name but he showed how a gas vent at the bottom of the ocean would cause boats to sink and planes to crash. Gas coming up through water removes its buoyancy causing even the largest ship to go down in short order. The same gas, being lighter than air, will keep rising and a plane's engine will get gas vapor instead of air causing the engine to fail and the plane to crash. Sounded reasonable to me.

If aliens have visited, and I'm not saying they haven't, they would avoid us for our and their own well being. You can't go from here to Mexico and drink the water, imagine coming here from Alpha Centauri? Their personal flora and fauna could be deadly to us and vice versa. Besides, any species willing to forgo what could be a large chunk of its lifespan to get here would be a dedicated explorer and probably not someone to fear. Case in point, the fastest human made object, a satellite, is currently headed to Pluto. It is traveling at 52,000 miles per hour and will take nine and half years to get there. Even if the aliens could travel at the speed of light, for each year you spend traveling that fast one hundred years passes for everyone left behind. Unless they live a very long time only someone extremely dedicated to the cause would attempt the trip.

The universe contains about 125 Billion star systems. To me it's obvious that there is more life out there.
I don't think mankind will ever be able to travel through space, it's simply impossible due to the fact of the distance ...!!!!
The Solar System is a home to two regions populated by smaller objects.
Planetary scientists use the terms gas, ice, and rock to describe the various classes of substances
found throughout the Solar System, the so called planets.
