In the late 80's through early 90's I worked in the Mission district, south of Market St., in San Francisco. We had an unofficial homeless camp, underneath a freeway overpass that was right behind our building. I pretty much saw it all.....fights, crime, hypodermic needle use, screwing under a blanket, human excrement.....

I've ranted about individuals for individual actions, but try not to generalize against them as a homogenous minority. There but for the grace of God....

Homelessness is a complicated issue, and all homeless people are not alike.

People may be homeless for many reasons :- Poverty, bad luck, misfortune, substance / alchohol / gambling addiction, mental health issues, victims of abuse, fear - some may even be criminals on the run or potential terrorists living 'off grid'.

Most will be a victim of one kind or another, unable to escape their predicament without outside intervention (whether they know it, welcome intervention or are violenyly opposed to it).

It is a sad fact, that most people would take a stray cat or dog home to shelter and feed it - or at the least call a charity to notify them of the animal, but would not do the same for a homeless person they passed in the street (myself included - to my shame). Possibly due to fear, ignorrance or just lack of knowledge or experience in how to deal with such situations. ( I, myself donate to 'Shelter', though I know it's not enough, and I should do more)

https://england.shelter.org.uk/donat...SAAEgLBt_D_BwE

I have sympathy .... empathy for anyone unfortunate to be homeless and living on the streets.

My Nan taught me a phrase when I was a child :-
"There but for the grace of god, go I"

Anyone could potentially be in such a position, so I do not understand how anyone with half a brain can 'hate' the homeless.

I hate the injustice of homelessness, and living in a country where it is 'breaking news' that Prince Harry's wedding is the same day as the FA cup final. With the number of UK homeless exceeding 307,000 - why is this not the main news story of the day, and every day, untill the majority of these poor souls are provided with at least the basic decency of a warm, dry roof above their head.

Any goverment who can spend £60billion on vanity projects like HS2, and any individual who can spend £1100 on the latest 'i phone', when people are cold and living on the streets, needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and decide if they class themselves as a 'good' person.

Rant over.

Peace and goodwill to you all (even Rogerbh)

One of my friends invited a homeless person over for Thanksgiving day dinner.

Suffice it to say he was glad to get him out of the house.

His family asked him to never do it again.

He is a much nicer person than I.

Have some homeless live on your property, make messes, create headaches and have no hope that anything will change.

Then you will learn to hate the homeless. The great imposition of making a donation to charity and thinking of the homeless a few times a year does not put you in the same class as those who have to clean up after them ad infinitum.

Unhappy ps

p.s.

Dog shelters keep a roof over their charges.

Horses are even protected from the elements, inside stables.

Why is a human being valued less ?

A 'civilised' society we are not

oh, as an aside; TESCO are keeping some of their stores open till 10pm on Christmas Eve (a Sunday) - they re-open 9am sharp Boxing Day
Who say's the real spirit of Christmas is dead ? Baaah Humbug !

Open up your house to them.

Feed them, support the churches and other organizations that provide services. Then have the ones who will not live in the shelters because they will not abide by the no alcohol and no drugs live on your property. It is so fun cleaning their piss and feces.
You can tell us how it is so rewarding to spend your time and lose money helping those homeless.

You're right ..... in that I am not in the same class as those who have to clear up after them. I have the greatest respect for those that do.

You are wrong, however - as I will not learn to hate the Homeless.

I am no stranger to hate :
I hate politicians (most) who are self serving and out of touch with real life
I hate an economy that values the skill to kick a ball around, or the savy to make millionaires even richer, as a vocation that warrants salaries many times that which a 'public servant' is awarded. Teachers, nurses, police officers, firemen - these are backbone of our world.

I hate greed and avarice. I'm not saying people who work hard shouldn't enjoy some rewards, or want to protect their families future - but how much money is enough ? After the first six zero's, what does it matter ?
'Celebrities' who watch their bank balance steadily increase, never intending to spend a fraction of what they already have.
The thing with money is, it's invisible. you don't look at someone in the street and they have a neon sign above their head with their bank balance
Put it another way - if we all ate one apple a day, and that was all you needed. You're walking around with a bag of 12. you see someone without one - wouldn't you share ? Now comes Mr Celebrity driving a tipper truck full of apples, with 10 more trucks following behind. He throws one apple for the needy. Wouldn't you look at him in a different light? Wouldn't you think 'greedy bastard' ?
Why do so many idolise 'Celebrities' - what is their contribution to society ?
I don't get it - I don't get this world

Your comments on the megarich are lost on me as I am not one of them. The people who aren't paid to clean up after the homeless aren't either. They are the small business owner who's walkways are cluttered with homeless. the building owner who has them breaking in, using electrical outlets, sleeping and crapping/pissing all over, etc. We don't have the luxury of deciding to help the homeless, we are forced to clean up after them.

F**k the homeless.

It's easy to say if you had money you would help the homeless, I just doubt that you would. It certainly wouldn't be on the list of priorities for most people.

Rogerbh,

you seem to be taking my comments as a personal attack upon you.
They are not intended as such, and I apologise if you feel that way.

I simply, vehemently disagree with you. You have your opinion - I have mine.

I shall not post further on this thread.

Peace be with you.

I understand your point of view. I'd not like to see dirty crazy people sleeping in front of my house.
In my village we get some social cases. But they are helped by the social system of the village or of the department. Our authorities take care of them.
They go to the doctors, they have a flat, the social care managed to clean their house, to bring food, try to find a small job and administrate their wealth... We (non-homeless people) pay taxes for this help.

May I ask you what are doing the authorities of your city?

Do you live in a liberal country that don't really blame tax avoidances of wealthy industries or very rich people?
A huge percentage of the problems of our societies come from tax avoidances.
