Exclamation Firefox 17 disaster

Upgraded to Firefox 17 today. It had seemed alright in the Beta version, which I'd run separately. But I was too quick off the mark. FoxTab TopSites wouldn't go away after it opened a site picked from it, so that I had to close the browser. I discovered that whatever search engine I used (I have Omnibar, don't know if that affected things) the results came from Google. And Google itself seemed to be screwed up, with the results scrolling behind the search box.

So I've gone straight back to 16.0.2 till things get sorted out. This is the first time I've not gone with an upgrade. Even though I have "check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" ticked in Options, at some point the meaning of this option has changed. Now, when I click "Check for Updates" on the About Firefox menu, it downloads the update and then tries to install it when you next start Firefox. On Windows 7, it can't, until you give it permission, but it'll still keep asking every time you try to start the browser, which is a pain.

Anyone else who needs to downgrade, links here:http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...leases/16.0.2/

[EDIT]
It seems also that if you have Tab Mix Plus installed, you can't get to the add-on manager, though I had to force this error by going to the TMP options menu.

[UPDATE]
Tab Mix Plus seems to have been the cause of most of the problems and has now been updated. Firefox itself has upgraded to 17.0.1. However, FoxTab is completely unusable. As the developers never bothered to acknowledge the existence of tab groups, it's looking a bit outdated anyway, but I still use its TopSites in preference to the newer built-in one.

It's ironic that the main attraction of Firefox - its huge library of add-ons - is also the cause of most of its problems. I generally have around a third of the add-ons, extensions and plugins disabled at any one time (more with a new update).

For those that have been having difficulty with Downloadhelper, I had the same problems and changed to FlashGot, which seems to be more stable so far and works with most sites.

FlashGot is worthwhile to know about, thank you!

As an update, I don't recall having any problems with Download Helper since just before last summer.

Been a big Firefox user & supporter since the early days when it was call Phoenix.

And then Firebird & finally Firefox.

Phoenix, Firebird logo.

Currently running version 18, I have about 30 add ons installed.

One of my favorite add ons for forums is ImageHost Grabber.

Does a great job getting a large collection of pictures of a forum thread.

Screen shots of my fully customized Firefox, and ImageHost Grabber in action.

I have found with the newer versions of FF a lot less problems, all my add ons seem to be fine atm, there is also the added problem at times of add ons conflicting. But all in all Firefox is what you make it, a basic reliable browser or a power house browser or some where in between.

What I like to do to keep things running very smoothly is to create multiple profiles.
Each profile geared for different tasks.
This way if I am only researching or surfing I can go very light
If I am collecting videos & photos I can switch the profile.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fir...ofileswitcher/

This easily allows me to switch
I also run multiple browsers.
I do almost all file uploading through Opera
I use this to open pages in a new browser.
It is helpful on a board where I mod & have to keep my uploader ID separate from my Mod ID.
Also when sites refuse to open in any browser but IE.

I went to Firefox several years ago after Internet Explorer was constantly crashing on me. Now Firefox is causing me concern. I have an older version of the browser 15.0.1 and I am constantly being bugged by Firefox to update to the latest version. I hesitate doing this because a prior update from Firefox had more bugs in it than a city dumpster. Every time I got on line all my browser setting were erased and my ad blocking software was completely deactivated. Does anyone know if this latest version is as bug filled. I hate to have so dated a browser.

This has been the cleanest version in a good while.
The huge memory leak issues they have had in the past seem to have disappeared.
I haven't needed to reboot the browser because of rocketing memory for months now. Here is a memoryfox reading attached

I'm on Firefox 18.0.2 and it's excellent. The imagehost grabber add-on is simply superb, it's much quicker than opening the rapidshare ( or other host's ) webpage, waiting the 60 seconds for a non premium download and un-RAR ing the compressed file.
