What if you lived in Australia?
Would you be terrified by the venomous wildlife?
What if one, or two or three of these decided to sleep in your socks? One bite can kill you in 90 minutes, you know Or what if you trod on one of these? One bite would give you a leg rash for at least a weekend Even Kangurus can outbox humans It's good Australian people are so friendly |

I saw a show once, might have been the late Steve Irwin, where house calls were made for people with snake problems in Australia. A women found a rather large venomous snake coiled in her sock drawer, don't remember what kind. A freakin snake in her sock drawer!!!! They removed it; but the house calls continued, as did the snakes.
I hate snakes. |

You wouldn't want one of these in your sock drawer
Unlocking the Mystery of the Duck-Billed Platypus' Venom ScienceDaily (Jan. 15, 2010) — Abandon any notion that the duck-billed platypus is a soft and cuddly creature -- maybe like Perry the Platypus in the Phineas and Ferb cartoon. This platypus, renowned as one of the few mammals that lay eggs, also is one of only a few venomous mammals. The males can deliver a mega-sting that causes immediate, excruciating pain, like hundreds of hornet stings, leaving victims incapacitated for weeks. Now scientists are reporting an advance toward deciphering the chemical composition of the venom, with the first identification of a dozen protein building blocks. Their study is in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Masaki Kita, Daisuke Uemura, and colleagues note that spurs in the hind limb of the male platypus can deliver the venom, a cocktail of substances that cause excruciating pain. The scientists previously showed that the venom triggers certain chemical changes in cultured human nerve cells that can lead to the sensation of pain. Until now, however, scientists did not know the exact components of the venom responsible for this effect. To unlock its secrets, the scientists collected samples of platypus venom and used high-tech analytical instruments to separate and characterize its components. They identified 11 new peptides, or protein subunits, in the venom. Studies using nerve cells suggest that one of these substances, called Heptapeptide 1, is the main agent responsible for triggering pain. The substance appears to work by interacting with certain receptors in the nerve cells, they suggest. I thought the Australians would be terrified of them, but then I noticed this bit. "the venom triggers certain chemical changes in cultured human nerve cells" The bastards are immune |

Brown Snake
On the farm once one of these got into the kitchen somehow or other, climbed up on top of a cupboard and stretched himself out. This caused a bit of activity so he decided it wasn't such a great spot after all and slithered away. The farm house was on stumps as well, about 4ft above ground level. It was a good place for snakes. We has a cattle dog who had 65 confirmed kills, over about a 10 year period. Kept telling her that they were a protected species but that didn't seem to make a lot of difference. |

I would live in a heart beat...
Here's why...
1. I live in a place where serious earthquakes occur. Not Japan sized, but LA types. 2. I live in a city with Gangs that would rather kill you than smile. 3. Ever tried to drive on our highways here?? 4. SMOG 5. The people are not friendly. I know I sound down in the mouth; it's America and we are allow those freedoms. But I have visited Australia; and those folks live a totally different style. Bottom line, I would vote down under!!
