Default Linking and quoting a post

If you want to point to another post, you have various possibilities to do so.

But first of all it is good to know how the syntax of vef-links looks like. Linking to a post, is nothing else then linking to another url.

So, how does the url of a post look like, and what part of it is essential?

Let me give you an example:

Code:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/showpost.php?p=1964846&postcount=3
Main part, VEF
second part, pointing to a post, and only to that post
essential part, Post ID
unnecessary part, position of the post in a thread, this can be removed

Code:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/showthread.php?p=1964846&postcount=3
This link points to the same post. Difference is, it doesn't display a single post, but the whole thread, but jumps to the post which is linked to.

Ho do you get this url?
  • Click on the small number top right of the original post,
  • the post opens in a new tab,
  • copy the presented url,
  • paste it into your post,
  • done.
It then looks like that:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/showpost.php?p=1964846

If you want to display the whole thread not just the single post, you can change showpost to showthread.
It then looks like that:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/sho....php?p=1964846

Try out both links, to see the difference.

You often see links that looks like this link or this link and wonder how this could be done?

To do so,
  • copy the url, you want to link to (I take the one from above),
  • click on the link icon,
  • paste the link into the pop-up field,
  • type your text, e.g. "this post" into the blue part,
  • done.

It then looks like that: this post

That's the BB-code behind it: [URL="http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/showpost.php?p=1964846"]this post[/URL]

If you further want to add a colour to the text, just mark the text and wrap the colour you want around it.

It then looks like that: this post

That's the BB-code behind it: [URL="http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/showpost.php?p=1964846"][COLOR="blue"]this post[/COLOR][/URL]

You have seen links that don't open in a new tab, but in the same tab?

The member probably used another possibility:
[post]postid[/post]
[post=postid]text[/post]

To do so, just type wrap [post][/post] around the Post ID, the one I have highlighted green in the beginning, so:

[post]1964846[/post] becomes to http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/showthread.php?p=1964846
or
[post=1964846]this post[/post] becomes to this post

What you should definitely not do, if you want to link to a specific post:

If you want to link to a post, don't link to a page of a thread. E.g., you want to link to this post, don't link to the thread-page, lets's say the first post on this page:
Code:
http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/t114275-p320-imagehost-problems-imagebam-imagevenue-pimpandhost-pixhost-imgbox-etc.html
Why?
  • Posts can be moved from one thread to another, so the link to the thread is no longer valid.
  • Other posts in the thread might get removed or added, so that your post is no longer in that place as at the time when you linked to it.
  • Other members are using different settings. The default is 10 posts per page, but another member can use a different option, 5, 20, 30 or even 40 posts per page.

Was that all? No. See the next post.

Default Quoting a post

You have surely seen posts using something like that:

That's a quote, but how does it work?

Easiest way:

Click on this button . The text will be quoted in your editor and you can add your reply. Just make sure, that you remove from the original post what's unnecessary. You can also copy that quote and add it in a post of you on every place at the forum.

You have seen that members quoted various posts in their reply, so how to?

Click on one or more posts on this icon:
At the last post of multiple posts you want to quote click on the quote button:
This way you will have all quotes in your reply, remove what's unnecessary, and then add your reply.

The original post, you want to quote, has a quote in it, which you also want to have, but using the quote button, you will not get it. So what's to do?

Click on this icon: the post will completely added to a PM. Remove what's unnecessary, copy what you need and insert it into your reply in the thread, e.g.:

Sorry, I missed it earlier, but there you *are* using boolean operators.
You want to quote a post, but you can't, because the threads are all locked, like in this section?

It works the same as above, just use the icon and c/p what you need in your own post.

Instead of using the icon, you can also use the drop down menu by clicking of the members name, choosing "Quote this post in PM to ..." (both ware working the same way), you'll get the complete quote post including also the post title, e.g.:
