As requested my useful freeware recommendations as they spring to mind from help offered.

Free DVD MP3 Ripper: Does what it says on the tin.

And a bit more besides. Converts DVD (*.vob), VCD/SVCD movie files(*.dat) and MPEG( MPEG-1, MPEG-2) files(*.mpeg, *.mpg) flawlessly to MP3 at user determined bitrates & sampling. Also edits ID3 tags.

VCD Gear

A veritable cornucopia of tools for extracting & converting various VCD & SVCD formats to .mpeg and vice versa. Also includes the best .mpeg repair tool I've come across.

Another invaluable little audio tool mpTrim

A simple and easy to use MP3 editor.

Particularly useful used in conjunction with Free DVD MP3 Ripper as we don't always get our timings spot on. And you can rid your DVD ripped .mpegs of those dramatic abrupt endings and jarring beginnings so beloved of movie sound editors by adding fade-in/out effects of varying lengths.

Also has a sister program WavTrim

I suppose that, like me, many of you have your porn stored on Cd's, DVD's and external hard-disks. and you think you have 'that file
somewhere', but where?

A truly great program for indexing disks and folders is Visual CD:
http://boozet.org/visualcd.htm

It has an advanced search tool to find the file you're looking for. It's also possible to add extra comments, like names of actresses in a movie.
It can also search on RAR, ZIP and 7zip contents and on MP3 tags and a lot more.

If you have an incomplete Mpeg-1 or MP3 or MP2 file, or such a file that is unplayable for some unknown reason, you can try Fixmpg1:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4942/svcd.html

It will take all the usable parts out of the file and use that to create an audio file (mp2) and a video file (mpv).
Multiplex it with a program like Tmpgenc and you have a playable file. It's not always succesful, but it works most of the time.

PearPC is an architecture-independent PowerPC platform emulator capable of running most PowerPC operating systems.

* License: GPL
* Programming language: C++, C and (on x86 platforms) assembler
* Supported host platforms: POSIX-X11 (Linux, ...), Win32

The following operating systems were tested and run (to some extent) in PearPC (ie. as clients):

* Mandrake Linux 9.1 for PPC installer: Runs well
* Mandrake Linux 9.1 for PPC after installation: Hard to boot. Runs very well afterwards.
* Darwin for PPC: Runs well
* Mac OS X 10.3: Runs well with some caveats
* OpenBSD for PPC: Crashes while booting (accesses PCI in an unsupported way)
* NetBSD for PPC: Crashes while booting
* AIX for PPC: Some people ask about that. See FAQ.

PearPC emulates the following hardware:

* CPU GENERIC: Sort of G4, including altivec. A more or less portable CPU. Using this CPU, the client will run about 500 times slower than the host. As of version 0.4 the generic CPU emulation runs well even on big-endian and 64 bit platforms.
* CPU JITC-X86: Sort of G4, including altivec. A very fast CPU for x86 systems that translates PowerPC instructions into x86 instructions on-demand. By caching these translations, a lot of speed is gained. Using this CPU, the client will run about 15 times slower than the host. Only works on x86 hosts.
* PCI-Brige: A barebone PCI-Bridge, enough to work with.
* IDE-Controller: Sort of CMD646 with bus-mastering support. You can attach IDE-harddisk(s) and/or IDE-CDROM(s) by specifying files (or devices for UN*X) from your host machine.
* PIC: A programmable interrupt controller (kind of Heathrow).
* VIA-Cuda: With attached Mouse and Keyboard.
* Network Controller: Emulates a 3COM 3C90x or RealTek 8139 via hosts that support an ethernet tunnel.
* NVRAM: Capable of storing 8KiB non-volatile memory.
* USB: A placebo USB-hub. Sufficient to make the client think that it has USB support.
* PROM: Sort of OpenFirmware. It's ugly and contains a lot of hacks but it allows to boot Yaboot and BootX from HFS/HFS+ partitions.

Default jZip Archive Utility

jZip is a light, fast, stable and powerful FREEWARE file compression and extraction utility which is ideal for the general user.

Quote: "Create, open and extract Zip, TAR, GZip and 7-Zip. Open and extract from RAR and ISO".

What it doesn't mention, but what I believe makes this unique amongst similar utilities is its ability to join .001 files. Just right click on the first file, select 'extract' from the menu and it will join the files without the need for any additional programs like HJSplit. I should point out, however, that it will only join .001 files, it won't split them.

This really is a great utility which I highly recommend. Here is a link to the developer's site: http://www.jzip.com/
