(1) George Martin and his Orchestra - Theme One
Written and produced by George Martin as the theme tune to BBC Radio 1, I remember listening to this before Radio 1 went on the air most mornings as a kid

(2) Dave Edmunds - I Hear You Knocking
Even as a youngster I thought this was the first record I heard that distinctly sounded like a Seventies song, and not a leftover from the previous decade

[EDIT] Tie for the third spot...
(3) Claude Bolling - Borsalino Theme
Forgotten all about the movie (memo to self: find it again), but the theme is simply timeless

(3) The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine
I'd completely forgotten this song until welderman posted it here:

http://vintage-erotica-forum.com/sho...ostcount=38899

10 Honourable Mentions:
Dusty Springfield - In The Middle Of Nowhere
The Beatles – All You Need Is Love
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby (fancied Donna Summer rotten back then - RIP)
The Archies - Sugar, Sugar
The Monkees - The Monkees Theme (Hey Hey We're the Monkees)
Paul Mauriat - Love is blue
Harry J All-stars - The liquidator (my old neighbour would play this and other Ska tunes incessantly back then)
The Jackson 5 - The Love You Save (in truth most of the songs from the Jackson 5's Motown collection could fit here)
The Supremes - Nathan Jones

Last Train To San Fernando / Johnny Duncan & the Blue Grass Boys (1957)
Splish Splash / Charlie Drake (1958)
Speedy Gonzales / Pat Boone (1962)
along with
Teddy Bear / Elvis Presley (1957)
Pop Goes The Weasel / Anthony Newley (1960)

Those are some of the earlest records I remember.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWRWYYt47RI

Pre - Elvis......

1. 'Put Your Shoes On Lucy'... could've been Anne Shelton / Nellie Lutcher / Petula Clark / whomever...found a stray cat and called her Lucy b'cos of the song on the radio. Pre-school

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy11MRttoukhttp://

2. 'On Top Of Old Smokey' - Gene Autry. Found out years later that the US embargoed their films from UK Distribution for many years after the War. Something to do with a "Commie Government and the Marshall Plan" Autry's films were apparently the first 'recent' US product to be shown in the UK... and they were 'support' films to the usual Anna Neagle/anyone-for-tennis/class-ridden bilge we
at that time .... but I heard it first in the cinema, and I can almost recall the joy of seeing and hearing GeneHere Comes Muffin... Autry in the support film, and then singing it throughout the Main Film - much to my mother's embarrassment .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDujyEzKtek

3. ' Here Comes Muffin....'.... enough said........ you wanted Childhood, not the teen angst nonsense....
