On the legal front again

Islamic State 'Beatles' El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Kotey could be tried in UK
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49170646

The two evil twats are currently being held in northern Syria.

The US wants to use evidence amassed by British investigators to put both men on trial there. However, Washington is refusing to give the UK a standard assurance that neither man would be executed if convicted.

I'm pretty fine with that if the US courts find these evil fuckers guilty then I won't lose any sleep over them being sentenced to death, these shitheads have enough blood on their hands and the prospect of our limp wristed, criminal friendly, give every evil twat yet another chance legal system slapping their wrists and sentencing them to a couple of years in a cushy jail to protect their human rights is abhorrent.

Give the fuckers to Uncle Sam and screw their families ........

I hope that didn't sound too harsh

Is "there" in Northern Syria or in the United States?

In hard legal fact, the legal government of Syria continues to be the Assad regime, no matter who wants it to be different. There is no other legally recognised state on Syrian territory.

That means that unless these men are arraigned before a court in Assad's Syria there is no other authority in Syria which can lawfully try or sentence them. This may be disappointing news, but due process and the rule of law isn't reserved only for people we happen to like.

These two appear to be our rubbish. If so, then we should bring them to justice here and not burden other countries with our own worthless crap.

They have been stripped of UK citizenship.

So we have absolved any legal right to have any say on what should happen to them in the future, good or bad. They could even be released and freed to carry on their war and murdering abroad, and then there is nothing at all the UK could legally do to them.

How's that for a clear conscience?

Much as I detest Ms Shamima Begum, I didn't agree with the decision to strip her of British citizenship. As with the two "Beatles" I also see her as British rubbish, to be appropriately tried and punished here in Britain. I suspect she would not be in Britain long before she started to wish herself back in the refugee camp in Syria because despite the creature comforts of western civilisation she will probably find things colder here than they are there.

I appreciate that the two Beatles murdered US citizens as well as British citizens (and other nationalities too); so it is not unreasonable for the Americans to want them. I think incidentally that our general policy of opposing the death penalty in other nations is ultra-vires. But if we are doing this in other cases then logically we have to do the same with these two unpleasant people. Unless the US authorities agree to waive the death penalty, there's no deal to be done. But I reckon that's the only condition we should set. If the US authorities sentence these two to whole-of-life in solitary confinement in a supermax prison where they will never again see or talk to another human being, that's fine with me.

I'd much rather they were quietly dispatched by an undercover SAS team and not banged up somewhere or other until they die at immense cost.

Default Hong Kong protests: Chinese army releases anti-riot video seen as warning

China's army in Hong Kong has released a three-minute video showing troops carrying out "anti-riot" exercises, in what is being seen as a thinly veiled warning to pro-democracy protesters.

The video, posted to social media, begins with a soldier shouting: "All consequences are at your own risk."

Tensions are high in Hong Kong after weeks of anti-government protests.

On Wednesday, more than 40 activists appeared in court charged with rioting, after Sunday's protest turned violent.

If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison.

Hong Kong, a former British colony, is part of China but enjoys unique freedoms not seen on the mainland.

China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) has so far stayed out of the protests that have gone on for eight consecutive weekends and brought parts of central Hong Kong to a standstill - leaving the territory's police to deal with the unrest.

But at a reception to mark the 92nd anniversary of the PLA on Wednesday, the commander of the Chinese army's garrison in Hong Kong said the protests had "seriously threatened the life and safety of Hong Kong citizens, and violated the bottom line of 'one country, two systems'.

"This should not be tolerated and we express our strong condemnation," Chen Daoxiang said, in comments reported by the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong newspaper.

The army video, posted to the Chinese social media site Weibo, shows lines of troops carrying shields and batons performing anti-riot drills. It showcases tanks, rocket launchers, water cannon and barbed wire before featuring heavily armed troops descending from helicopters and shooting their way through the streets and into people's homes.

Protesters can also be seen being arrested and walked, with their arms tied behind their backs, to "detention points".

Given that their mayhem occurred in Syria, it seems that the Syrian government has the primary claim to jurisdiction. No doubt they have legal processes to ensure a fair and speedy trial and prompt martyrdom which should be to the satisfaction of all parties.

Very conveniently, the Syrians Russian allies are available to act as intermediaries.

I have found the outcry against Iraqi treatment of war criminals from foreign nations puzzling. Thugs who cross international borders to cause mayhem and murder another nation's citizens should expect to be executed if their side suffers military defeat. The Iraqis at least gave them trials and handed out prison sentences to many. Not all have been hanged.
