I simply believe violent offenders should be punished, for every toerag that goes out and commits violence you will find others who have had it much worse in life who do not resort to violence. It's too easy to blame the rest of society for the actions of a few slimeballs.

I think he was commenting my belief that high crime rates, particularly violent crime and economic downturns are related. I get the impression he disagrees strongly.

2 blogs, a cut & paste on encyclopedia.com plus a book written over 30 years ago, before crime in the US reached it's peak in the early 90s.

Anecdotally, we do find older ex-convicts committing violent crimes when paroled, but I have personally known others who worked very hard to change attitudes and behaviors rather than risk returning to prison.

Reading the bank robbery article was sad. Truly desperate people committing crimes for which they faced almost certain capture and conviction. On the other hand, most bank robbers of the 19th century suffered violent deaths. Many were shot to death by armed citizens or law enforcement. Others died by hanging, either legal but often extralegal as few in law enforcement would risk their own lives to protect robbers from angry mobs.

The more notorious one was, the more likely it was that one would be cut down in a hail of bullets a la Bonnie and Clyde. Only the lucky few survived to serve long penitentiary sentences.

U.S. crime rates peaked in 1978.

You complained a few posts back that all you could find was a single newspaper article. So do your own goddam research and prove me wrong. The issue you challenged has been commonly accepted for 150 years, Dude.
