Philistine opinion is formed by television. In the US, Russia and Europe, it is the media that keeps the philistine "for their balls". And as for the existence of the third major branch of Islam (Kharijites), only the Arabists heard. Why am I talking about this? Yes to the fact that to judge the events in the Middle East, it is necessary to have at least a minimum of information. Best of all is not from the media. And in Russia and in the western countries - a lot of idiotic prejudices.

most of us who work in the Middle East for the International organisations, speak Arabic fluently, have a decent understanding of Islam, and the various sects within it. But as an analyst, I agree the general public has little understanding, and a right wing back lash is a real possibility!

Yes. I'm not so much about academic professionals. They, unfortunately, are often not invited to TV. Western and Russian media are often full of "media analysts" very far from professional level. Yes, and professionals have no time to do it. Unfortunately. And this is exactly what causes blanks in the minds of the inhabitants. I'm talking about piles of antiscientific literature. Pseudo-historical works that you can buy (and many people buy them) for three dollars. And people believe. Without thinking. And knowledge is work.
So to such orientalists as you need to go to the public level more often and explain to the average person the subtleties and nuances. Everything rests in time and platforms from which it would be possible to broadcast.
