Default How to brighten video clips

There have been several suggestions made on VEF on how to brighten JPGs taken from a darkly-filmed scene but can any VEFer point me to any software (preferably freeware!) which can be used to enhance a dark video clip? Or am I expecting the impossible?

Moon Raker, do you mean just when watching, as with brightness/contrast/gamma controls like VLC media player or windows media player have, or do you mean to brighten it etc. and 'save' it as a new clip that's brighter etc. to start off with, so's you don't have to faff about with thsoe controls every time you want to watch it?

You can in fact do both in VLC - set the gamma correction using the Adjustment and Effects panel (press CTRL-E) and then save the result using the method described here: http://www.wintips.org/how-to-rotate...c-media-player (point no 7 onwards). There are supposedly other ways of doing this - for example, Convert/Save (CTRL-R) and then put the correct parameters into Edit Options (have to tick 'Show more options' to see this) but I haven't been able to get that to work.

Thanks for the responses and I should have made my requirement clearer. I want to be able to brighten/enhance the video on a permanent basis (i.e. save it back to a file) so that I can upload the corrected file for other members. I will give the VLC gamma adjustment method a try later this week.

Virtualdub and Avidemux have brightness filters.
