My suggestion would be when colouring people who weren't available in colour such as Mae West go for realistic colours, if doing someone who has colour pics available such as Charmaine go for a more dreamlike quality.
Also viewing a coloured pic alongside the original like a 3D image so one eye focuses on each pic produces an interesting visual effect. For this reason can I request that those of you doing this good work post your new pic next to the original as some of you have been doing.
For when you get time heres a pic of Jilly Johnson, my request is dreamlike, perhaps as if lit by strange colours from different directions.

Mr mynxfan - your wish is my command. I'm going to work with your second photo at full posted size although it is kind of blurry. If it pleases you when it is done, you can cut it down a little when you get it (or let me know to post two versions if you don't have the tools to do that).
Mr nopar king - (any relation to nosmo king?) I hear your advice, but my intention on Mae was to make her outfit dramatic and flashy, just like the lady herself. I'm still not completely satisfied with the colors I chose, but it takes so damn long to do something like that (really big image), I'm limited in the number of changes I can do. I'd love to know what colors that dress really was. And I'm sorry, did you ask that the b/w image be posted next to the colored one, or that a color image used as a guide be there? Your Jilly Johnson pict is now number three in line, maybe done by tomorrow. I've only attempted the lighting thing you requested once before, so this should be interesting.

mynxfan - following are the two colored photos you reqested. Something new, I've never colored a tongue before, and you give me two with your first two picts. Regarding the hair in the first, the density of the grey determines how dark the color will be in the finished product. I looked through my collection and picked the darkest red I could find. The second is still full sized, didn't have much trouble with it (not more than normal) except that it has a lot more detail to cover than most of the stuff I do. Happy?

My suggestions were just suggestions based on my opinions not advice.
I think all the stuff here is interesting although obviously I like some more than others.
My point was with someone like Mae West a realistic version of yours is the only way of knowing what she would have looked like, please see my comments as critisism as I like what you did, the same with very old family pics which were mentioned there is no other way of getting an original version. With someone like Charmaine Sinclair or Jilly Johnson colour pics can easily be found if you want true realism. Which is where I see your art offers a chance to see something different, someone mentioned it being like a cover version of a song, theres not much point making it identical to the original.
Thats why I suggested "dreamlike" I haven't given you any clothing to work with & make up will be a only a small part of the picture so I didn't know what to say other than different coloured lighting.
If you want broader advice then I'll be happy if you do something different & unusual.
To clarify another point I like it best when 2 or more versions of the same pic are posted next to each other, like this

I'm not an extremely irritable person. You are allowed to comment, suggest, criticize, or deride all you want, and all I'm going to take away from it is maybe a different way of looking at things or a different idea of how to make a certain effect in what I'm doing. Your comments on the Mae West photo caused me to do some research on whether anyone knew the original and had described it in detail. I found lots of stuff on her, way to much to attempt to read in what remains of my lifetime, but I did come away with another idea of colors for that dress, and I'm going to rework it at some time in the near future. Thank you.

I've never much attempted to do anything with the pictures I color except what I would consider an attempt to make them as realistic as possible. bruno86 was the innovator there but he seems to have passed from this thread after founding it. I will, if requested by anyone, give my best attempt to satisfy their desires, and I'll rework it until they are satisfied or we both give up.

Now, back to your request on the Jilly Johnson pict. I need your indulgance on coming up with something that satisfies you. Below are a series of pictures which illustrate what I have done so far. First row, 1) the original slightly reworked to clean it up, 2) then a picture of Jilly I grabbed from another thread with colors adjusted a little (sorry I don't remember who posted it, but thanks), 3) a picture with just the girl colored (nice looking chick, by the way, when are you going to introduce us?), and finally 4) a finished copy which illustrates the realistic concept.



Now comes the interesting part. First pict is with two different lighting patterns imposed on the background which do not impinge on the girl, her color is unchanged. The second pict is very much the same as the first, but now the girls features have been colored to be affected by the lighting source. What do you think? If you want any changes, start with telling me what lighting colors or directions you want considered. Note: this isn't as difficult as you may think to create all those different versions, so feel free to experiment.

The work on JJ pics is stunning, judging by what was already here I knew I'd like the result but you spoilt me by doing several versions. You ask if I want you to make any changes. I'm tempted to ask you to do more but you don't need to. But if you want to for your own enjoyment I'd like to see the results. What I'm thinking is I'll look for another pic for you to do sometime, to give further idea of how I view what you do I'm almost tempted (but I won't) to give you a colour pic & ask you to turn it monochrome & then add colour & produce something different. Jilly is very attractive, but if I was in a position to introduce you I wouldn't be on here, I'd be with her right now, but that pic will date from the 70s so she must have changed. If you want stunning topless pics in b/w have a look at 70s p3 girls.

nopar king - stunning is not a word I've heard used very often on the stuff I do, but thank you. To create Jilly's picts, I first colored the girl (2nd version) then masked the girl from the background, intending to do a series. Being able to color the background and girl separately made the rest easy, and will make any further revisions relatively simple. On the last one, I kind of rushed through painting the colors on the girl's body, so it is kind of crude nevertheless.

Take a color picture, convert to b&w then colorize it; already been done and shown on these pages. See the pictures of Linda Gordon on post #40, pg 4. My original was b&w, and just recently I found a color version. Quite frankly, I like my version better than the original, it pops more, and I have to change my bib every time I look at it. Maybe I'm not so much into realism as I thought. Another example is the coloring on the Mae West picture by gers1960 (post 37, pg 4) and mine (post 63, pg 7). We had different concepts and approached it differently. I'm still going to do Mae again, you'll see the results here at some future date.

For your entertainment, I'm including three pictures that I colorized from my private collection that I am particularly pleased with. First is the only other where I have played with lighting. Notice that the wall and floor near the globe are different colors than if further away on the left. Also the front of the lady is slightly colored due to the proximity of the glowing globe. On the second, I spent a lot of time tracing individual strands of hair. That combined with the interposition of green leaves on the tree and golden sunlight was particularily difficult and satisfying. In the final, notice the trails of water on the beach running back to the ocean and the slow disappearance of the sand under the surface as the water gets deeper. I enjoy my work and particularly attempt to do a good job whenever I get the chance.
