19th Century Stereo Nudes
Here are a few stereo images from 1887-1900. For those of you who don't know what stereo images are, they consist of two images photographed from two slightly different angles meant to duplicate the distance between one's eyes. When the left image is viewed with the left eye and the right with the right eye, it creates a 3 dimensional image. So if you happen to have a stereo viewer, you'll be able to see these girls in 3-d.

Back a few years ago. used to be a regular customer at the Keystone Collection held by Univ. of Riverside Calif.
They have like 350,000 stereo views going from 1886 to about 1956 taken all over the world. |

Just a point of interest, do you recall about 15 years ago there was a fashion for a series of pictures which looked just like a jumble of colours, but when you stared at them from a certain distance, they became 3-d images? This was caused by relaxing the eyes and de-focussing them so that each eye saw a different part of the picture. Believe it or not, I can do the same with stereographs, provided that the pictures are within a certain distance apart. I look at the images, defocus my eyes and the two pictures become three. By looking at the one in the middle, the image suddenly snaps into 3-d. I'm not joking, just try it. It takes a while to be able to relax the eyes enough and, as I say, the images have to be within a certain spacing and the distance from the screen has to be varied to get it right. Once you have done it two or three times, you get to recognise the parameters that will enable it to be viewed. The pics above are a little too large or close together for me on this occasion, but I have copies of several of these in one of the Taschen books, and they are smaller and enable me to get the distance right. Would be interested to see if anyone else does this. Margib Last edited by Estreeter; September 5th, 2009 at 01:37 AM.. Reason: Overquote |

Yup, I can do this - and in fact there are two methods, one easier than the other. The first as you say is to stare - actualy focusing on a point behind the image until the 2 merge. This is more tricky and takes more practice and is easier on smaller images. The second is to go cross eyed. What you'll notice here is a reverse of the 3d - concave rather than convex: this can be solved by editing the image so the position of the 2 pictures is reversed. Can play havoc with the eyes though.... There is in fact no reason we can't have perfect 3d personal film. All that's needed is a headset with a different LCD for each eye projecting images filmed at the right seperation - the brain will then merge the two giving full 3d perspective.
