A lot to be said for that, my hair continue's to grow, while my friends who never liked the Beatles are either bald or have a serious receeding hairline.

Played their 1 album the other day. it made me realise just how good they were. Lennon/ McCartney as solo artists never regained what they had when they were Beatles. As a unit, either writing together or separately, they were something else. But when the band split, their individual talents evaporated. They needed each other as a soundboard creatively. It was then Harrison came to the fore, while Ringo, cashing in on his fame as an ex-Beatle, recorded some pretty mediocre stuff. And lets face it, there were better drummers out there. I never really got into the band until Rubber Soul and Revolver. I hated Sgt Pepper-still do. As a sixty-five year old, listening to the mindless, moronic crap out there today; manufactured bands, relying on image and little else and with a sell by date of a few months, I know the Beatles will never reach that sell by date. they will be with us forever

Even in 1963 their music was sophisticated enough to attract a rave review from The Times classical music reviewer, William Mann. (Who later wrote a book about heir work). 1963's 'All My Loving' won the UK Songwriter's Guild Novello award for the best song of 1963. Impressive, as only fellow songwriters got a vote. Even more impressive is that it was an album track and not a single. From early days, their songs were more complex than their rivals, but still accessible and extremely popular. The Beatles never stood still. Subsequently, their songs got more and more sophisticated - just consider 'Yesterday', 'Strawberry Fields', 'Penny Lane', 'Tomorrow Never Knows' and 'I am the Walrus', incredibly complex songs that were still very popular.. Look on YouTube for Howard Goodall's evaluation of the Beatles. He looks at their songs from a classical musicians point of view, and explains their techniques very well. He thinks they saved Western Chromatic Music. He is quite convincing. And, sadly, after the split, none of them reached such heights again. Anyone who thinks the Beatles weren't that talented should try to hit the notes McCartney hit on songs like "Helter Skelter." It's a once in a lifetime voice. Harrison was considered by guitarists like Les Paul, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page to be one of the best of all times. Lennon's songwriting skills and voice are really second to none. And Ringo.. OK, Ringo. But seriously. Every artist that's recorded an album since 1967 wonders how the hell they did Sgt. Pepper, and how you can equal it. The only artist who ever did was them, with "Revolver," "Rubber Soul," and the White Album. Someone mentioned in another thread that music has been going downhill since the 60's, and I don't know if I agree, but can you think of anyone since who had the kind of impact on ALL music, from pop to rock to jazz and even country that the Beatles and the Rolling Stones did. Geez, over 60 years later, and NO song rocks quite like "Satisfaction," and no one can equal those incredible Beatles albums from Rubber Soul to Abby Road. |
