Questions for our German Friends
I thought this thread already existed, but don't see it. (Apology if I'm mistaken).
It's about Merkel. She is blasted in other threads here. That's easy. But now she is symbol for other issues. Is it true, very difficult to remove sitting Chancellor? Good or bad IYO? Will she survive? Maybe resign? Germany seen from outside as united, consensus society, not so much Elites apart from Real People. Valid?

Any posters whose first language is not English deserve double thanks imo, but can't do it myself.

germans have exactly one big problem, which is the main reason for all the other problems. i know, many germans who read this will not share my opinion, but in my view most germans are way too obedient.

the answer to "will she survive" depends on, what happens in the next month. and there will happen a lot. overall, yes. sure, there are rich and poor people and the middle class isn't so strong in every federal state. the stronger the middle class is, the lesser are the tensions between rich and poor. in big cities the problems are a bit more obvious but in general, germany is still a consensus society.

The two issues are connected. Germany is a "let's come to a consensus most of us can agree on and then stick to it" kind of country, i.e. the consensus is regarded important for the working of society, and the "obedience" side is part of it.

the question is, how long does it work? it's a bit ironic when the obedience, that keeps it all together, destroys it all in the end ---> ww2. sometimes it's like dancing on the thin red line

Yes, but you get these days more cinemas also showing the films in the original version (or with subtitles). In my youth there was none of that. But then, in my fledgling years fewer people could speak/understand English (including myself).
If the dubbing is done well, I prefer it over the sub-titling when the film's in a language I don't understand. It allows me to forget that I'm watching a movie, and immerse myself with the story. With subtitles I always keep a distance. Many people in English-speaking countries do not quite understand that, because they have mostly experienced pretty awful dubbing, e.g. when a couple of people speak all the roles, when non-acting English-speaking ex-pats are used to do the dubbing in the country of production, or when the dialogue has been translated poorly, etc. Because (good) dubbing is so commercially important in Germany, more care is applied when films are dubbed. On rare occasions films can be improved by good dubbing. One example is the film "We're no angels", with Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, etc. I really liked the film, but only knew the German-dubbed version; when I watched the original for the first time I was a bit disappointed - mostly by Bogey's delivery. He is not a comedy actor, and it really showed; but in the German dubbing, his delivery was perfect. |
