Traditional striptease
Keep getting 'em off! It looks as striptease has many traditions, though most people seem agreed that on thing it isn't is pole dancing! Though the debate seems to range round the idea that some ladies show class and some show something else that rhymes with class, stage, music, costume, tease and nudity all go to make striptease a fire-lighting thrill, theatrical tension and relief. The material posted is fantastic and needs savouring before I pass much comment, so I'll just post these pics from another book (I wish I understood it, not that the drawings take much understanding). There are many. many more pictures in it and these few are just a taster of what its like - if you want to know how her strip ends (very tastily) you know what to get. Most striptease gets me really going, so I delight in Michelle's sudden tartiness and her tease with her tiny, tiny g-string as much as I wallow in the sleaze in the first Get 'em off clip - knickers off, delicious, but surely the tradition should be bra first, then knickers? Still the sleaze factor was almost up to the Carnival standards - the mirrors at the back of the stage were a knockout, pity they hadn't put ones on the floor as well. At least one Soho club had tickets you could use for a whole year. With people posting stuff like they have been recently, who needs one of them (too bad if you did, they're well and truly vintage). More, more! |

Re the clips posted from Get Em Off! Well to be honest they were mostly awful, with that crappy 70s psychedelic 'music' with perhaps only one bit that bore any relation to real stripping music but even that was interrupted by the voiceovers-but the BIGGEST shock for me was one voice was Hugh Sculley-the doyen of Nationwide, Watchdog and the Antiques Roadshow in the 80's & 90's-it would be a bit like discovering Angela Rippon had once been a stripper!! A good effort though, but that sort of programme would in truth bore me now.

Yet to watch all those fantastic clips but just to keep the front row happy, here's a pic of a lady peeling ever so slowly for our pleasure. Does this half-way stage please those who like stockings left on or those who like them to come right off? Keep it all coming...more, more! Last edited by ecdysiastic; January 3rd, 2011 at 08:14 PM.. To answer the other question-Burlesque or Stripping off-well they are both welcome with the first being a little more refined and has what Gypsy Rose Lee's mother sang about "ya gotta have a gimmick!" so a featherboa or large fans for Burlesque and more underwear/clothing for stripping. It started in the US but the word is a French/Italian mix - see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burlesque and today the best exponents are Heather Renee Sweet or as you would know here better Dita von Teese and in Britain Immodesty Blaise or Kelly Fletcher. The main difference being Dita has gone nude and Immo hasn't.Stripping was also seen as sleazy because special 'shops' catered for the 'dirty raincoat mob' which I won't describe in detail and would more often than not be raided by police(here) in the 1970's which some consider to its heyday-even had a depiction of one in an episode of the tough crime drama "The Sweeney" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sweeney Also stripping would be mainly confined to men's working clubs hosted by comedians and pubs in this country which is probably why it is seen as sleazier than Burlesque. I think it is true to say that Burlesque is more an art form(or was) than stripping which can be done even drunk!

To strip or to tease.. That is teh question
Well When it comes down to the striptease, the question really isn't about the music, or the clothing, or the dance styles the artists do, but rather it's more about whether they want to strip off all their clothes, or strip only so far, and thus 'tease' teh audience, to let them imagine wat it would be like to go all the way.
Then of course you got the question, of how far they should go... a lot of the dancers in the 1930's and 1950's here in the US tended to strip down to a tiny G-string, and maybe a pair of stockings and or shoes. (This practice of stripping down to just the shoes, is still in exotic clubs today and it's not only for the asthetics either (in some dives, it's because of the health reasons..) But in the European nations, (Like the UK, France, and Germany, not to mention Denmark, The netherlands, and Sweden), the thing is how far will the women go to push the envelope without the law, coming in and shuttng down the place.. (places like Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands, which are more liberal, tend to go alll the way, or leave very little to the imagination... Places like the UK, Germany, and France who are a tad more conservative, let the ladies strip down to just pasties, and a G-strings (and some of the ladies tend to strip down to those, plus the garter belt, and the stockings... So the question isn't rather is it about the nudity, but how much tease, without the sleeze, is presented. I mean granted that we've watched burlesque begin in the 1920's (with the Minsky brothers presenting the first striptease ever), the refinement of the tease , (Twith strippers like Gypsy Rose Lee, and Tempestt Storm, and Blaze Starr), and then the decline into what it became (The topless/nude go-go dancing of the 1960's and 1970's), to the exotic Dancers who strip down to topless or nude (of the 1980's to today) and then of course the "Neoburlese" that started in the mid 2000's and is in vogue today as an art form, (and not an act per se). If you look at the two different styles (Exotic dancer of today) to that of the neo-burlesque, you see that the neo-burlesque kpps the classiness, the music, the feel of the 1930's and 1950's, plus they have on all the makings of the cloting that gives us that hint of imagination (What are they wearing under the dress or outfit?).. Today's exotic dancers, use more modern music (From rock to rap) , and wear little more than a dress, and underneath, a bikini outfit.. if that. Again, it's all about 'teasing' than stripping. and in the end, a lot of guys who want the act.. what the tease, more than the sleaze.. I think that's something to think about when it comes to striptease...the final question is .. what do the male viewers want..? So once we get some answers to those questions, only then can we really define what 'striptease' is...and what burlesque is.. and what exotic dancing is.. that's the bottom line really.. Ha ha you got to love that commentary "don't be in a hurry to copy this girls unless you have central heating in your room!" talk about patronising but SoHo has certainly changed a lot since that was done and of course the Raymond Revue bar went from strength to strength-he died some years ago Paul Raymond.
