Filehost Advice & Solutions after major host takedowns.

When we call a Filehost a cash host we are saying that they pay their members cash each time one of their files is downloaded. Mediafire and Rapidshare don't do that.
Rapidshare give free Rapids but they can't be converted into money.

I wonder how many of those who post here - and particularly those who determine the banned filehosts list - have actually made money from these hosts that hand it out so apparently freely? Yes, I'm honest enough to admit I made a little bit from FF before MU went down. FF no longer pays at all. I have credit there which I can only use to extend my subscription for a host that no-one uses any more. I recently obtained a premium subscription to RG - not to make money particularly as I see that as a lost cause. But simply because the vast amount of material out there is now hosted on RG or DF. We live in a cloistered little world here where people are kind enough to use RS and MF but frankly that isn't repeated anywhere else. And it's generally 'anywhere else' that material is being garnered from to be reuploaded for posting here. I have an RS account too - I have to have one because there is a lot of stuff posted here (FC etc) which I want that I can't get hold of straight away without one - so I pay. The reality is that I have paid a thousand times more for subscriptions to filehosts and sites to obtain material for posting here and elsewhere than I have made from cash hosts'. But those days are gone. I don't expect to upload and post any more. It's just not worth it.

Much of the bleating (and I use the word advisedly) comes from people who have never bought a premium subscription to a file host but still expect to be able to have everything for free. If they could get what people upload to what are these days incorrectly termed cash-hosts for nothing, they wouldn't worry a jot about people making a cent for a hundred downloads - it's the fact that they can't always get them immediately and for free that they don't like, which then provides the perfect excuse for having a go instead at 'the mercenary moneygrabbers'!! Face it, without the uploaders, everything dies. This forum accepts FF and DF links but not RG. Makes no sense to me. If you're going to operate this system fairly, you're gonna have to limit links to RS and MF and stop scapegoating those who use different hosts. Otherwise hypocrisy rules, OK.

I don't believe this has been the case for some considerable time. I've generated no free rapids from RS for more than a year now although I did have so many 'rapids' at one time that I had about 2 years for free. Nothing since. I've had to pay real money for my subscriptions since.

VEF never banned file hosts for the sole reason of being "Cash hosts" (although I begged them to, to no avail ). There are other factors involved concerning what gets banned here.

IMO, the concept of cash hosts nearly ruined the file sharing hobby. Not the actual money making, but the money grubbing. Behind the scenes, this place was a disaster area dealing with all the money grubbers. And yet (again against my ignored begging), the powers that be here bent over backwards to treat them fairly. Some of them took advantage of that too. But, since the demise of filesonic, things have quieted considerably.

I can understand that - and live with that. What I don't follow is why I still see ******** and Depositfiles links here but not Rapidgator links. If you only really want members to use Rapidshare and Mediafire, then so be it. At least we all know then where we stand.

There are lots of forums about, but we all know that this is the best one due to the sheer depth of knowledge and the ability of members to upload and post some truly wonderful things.

I was recently banned for a month for allegedly using VEF for 'commercial reasons' (or words to that effect). My answer - I wish! I've not made a penny from anything I've posted here or anywhere else for about 6 months and I don't expect to be able to again. It's no longer important as my desire to spend my time uploading and posting stuff (most of which is unique - or close to) has now severely wained. I've just had a large thread deleted which had been running for I suspect a couple of years with many hundreds of posts. No warning, no message and when I query why it's been deleted, I'm simply told 'This was spam'. Pardon me? I understand that the rules are the rules and if we break them we suffer the consequences, but as I said before, if you drive the day-to-day uploaders away, the niches that VEF serves (and very well) are going to become smaller and smaller and, as I've begun to notice over the last few months since the MU and FS fiascos, it will become more and more a photo-based board as people just won't upload videos here.

Have you clicked a Rapidgator link recently? You cannot get access to any file hosted by them unless you are a premium member or you register with them. Nobody should be forced into registering with anyone.

As for your comment about how VEF will become more and more a photo-based board as people just won't upload videos here., that's wrong, several new videos are being uploaded here every day. Mostly in the modern section but some in classic.

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, Mr. Gussett, just trying to explain it the best I can.

I dont see this problem. There are still a lot of videos and clips posted here on VEF every day and the uploaders use different OCH. It would be a nightmare for me if VEF would be a place like pornbb or porn-w, where hundreds of uploaders posting the same stuff again and again and again on the same hoster (and rapidgator is the most used for this since oron is gone). It is terrible. The big advantage of VEF is that quality counts and not quantity. I think we dont have to change a thing on the way how VEF works because it works great.

I'm a RG premium member, but I know others who have successfully downloaded without taking up membership. Bottom line is, if you want the file badly, you register. If you don't, you don't....


I see your take on the board. It's not one I agree with - having been a member here for a reasonable time. But I respect your view...

Fair enough. We will see what happens. My bet is that this board will look very different in a year or so's time. I fully expect most of the file hosters to have gone down the pan anyway.

I do agree that bb and w are pretty awful and it is strange how some boards positively encourage the multiple posting of the same material. I guess VEF cares that little bit more about quality...

Now I wonder if I'll ever find out why that thread was binned.....

I hadn't posted in it for a while, but on my inglorious return I went to make a post only to discover that RG was banned.... Whether that had anything to do with it (although I don't know why it would), I don't know. I'm not so fussed about the thread - I don't intend to post to it anymore now anyway, I'd just like to know why it was binned and why I couldn't have been told why that was being done.
