£5M, wow! Depending on which report you believe, that £5M is anything from twice to as much to as six times what the club has spent over the last TWO seasons combined. Happy days, yeh. Last season (2009-10) Liverpool spent £10,000 (ten thousand) net on new players, the season before £2.5M net. Please don't believe everything the Sun writes.

The reports not actually in the sun but across various forums and websites. Liverpool to me need a much stronger bench and need a much stronger in depth squad. They need to keep their better players, but they now have no real high priced players they can sell and keep their main squad. Players like Mascherano, Torres and Gerrard are the only players that would contribute a good size transfer fee to improve the squad overall. They may have spent little net on players, but when you run out of players you can sell you need to fund your own purchases and from a non Liverpool viewpoint they need 4-5 players bringing in that will challenge for places and will give them a better bench. You cannot do that with £5 million.

Well if the reports are in forums and websites they must be true.

Look, we've had no money to spend for a few years now and I don't think that will change anytime soon, we just have to ride it out and see where we are when we come out th other end. We finished seventh, not seventeenth! It's the press, TV and other media (especially other club's supporter's forums) that hype all the crap about us expecting what we are meant to expect. Historucal rivalries and jealousies. Reading this thread we are even to blame for certain teams being relegated! The knives have been out in the press and TV all season. Ever watched that prog on sky on a Sunday where the 'top' (sic) sports reporters from the national papers discuss the football issues of the week? They've been trying to get Raffa sacked since the first kick of last season's first match! It reached fever pitch so many times through the season that it is a wonder he didn't walk.

All the hype was based on what the paper's, TV and etc had reported on themselves ratherthan what was actually happening in Liverpool. No supporter who actually goes to the game or who seriously follows what goes on expected us to win the league last season after the promises of money to spend failed to come to anything. Losing Alonso was the final straw, although losing Hypia was also significant.

The local paper has done some pretty good analysis of the most recent accounts and they don't make good reading. The £40M interest paid each year has apparently been based on what the club can afford after paying it's running costs rather than what is needed to repay the interest that is accruing - hence the amount of debt has increased year on year and won't come down untill new investment is found or running costs are reduced. In response to the ex owner (Moores) calling for the Americans to step aside Hicks has this week told the local paper that additional money will be made available for new purchases - ie no need to sell players - but he said the same this time last year and then suddenly the club pulled out of the purchase of Tevez, Barry, Wright Phillips et al (funny that Tevez and Barry ended up joining Wright-Phillips at City - look what happened to them). Apparently the financial model that purchased the club and finances it to this day is typical in the States, hence Hicks and Gillette not seeing the problem. The difference is that the American model is based on club 'franchise' where the name, league place and players are purchased and moved to wherever the new owner wants to move it to find a new fan base. Imagine Abromovich moving Chelsea to Moscow and basing the club there and you'll get the idea. With the UK set up you buy the bricks, mortar and hearts and souls, but not the loyalty. Things will certainly get worse before they get better, but maybe they have to before the grusome twosome will cut free - having bought the club with the club's own money and having made a massive profit for putting very little of their own money into the pot.

What I want - and most I speak to want - is not to increase that debt unnecessarily chasing an impossible dream. The nucleus of a good team is still there, so if we repeat this season next season so beit. By the way we actually managed without Gerrard and Torres for much of last season anyway - so if they can actually stay fit and get their heads right (Gerrard in particular) then maybe we could do a little better. Better to finish mid table and get rid of the yanks with the club intact than the alternative - don't want to risk the ire of supporters of other clubs - but the debacle of Leeds under Peter Ridsdale springs to mind, hate to copy that.

All the paper talk - and forum talk - about what 'we' expect is just that - talk. Usually from papers looking for a headline that will sell papers, from rival supporters trying to get a dig in, or from so called Liverpool supporters who haven't been within two hundred miles of Anfield. There are no fellow league clubs who can better our trophy haul over. Even over the last ten years there is only Man U and Chelsea who have done better. What we expect is that we strive for the best we can do, that we compete and give our all - isn't that what all supporters want?

Well if Liverpool want to compete then they need to find money from someplace to buy players of better quality than what they have now. Their bench is poor, they have very few outside of the first 11 main players who can change a match and who can make the difference between losing and maybe drawing or winning a game.
Whilst it maybe paper talk, as I dont support them I can only go on what Liverpool forums and the media say.
I think its unfair for people to blame Liverpool for relegating teams, because at the end of the day the teams themselves are to blame. It might be slightly diffrrent in Pompey's case where it was off the field circumstances as much as on the field ones that resulted in their relegation, but Hull and Burnley were just not good enough and thats no ones fault except their own.

My take on Liverpool is that they are currently a rotten side - not only by their high standards, but by the current 'top six' standards.

The blame for this comes in many forms. From the board room you have the current Yank debarcle brought on by the club going down the route of chasing foreign money like so many have, only to find out the pots of gold are made of Caramac wrappers.

Money doninates football and Liverpool have been left behind as they can't compete with the millions Chelsea and City have to spend. Man Utd have also seen the purse strings tightened, but this has happened with them being in a better position on the pitch, so less to fall. United have also had their youth system to fall back on which has delivered a decent return over the years. That's the route Arsenal have tried to go down, and Wenger has a decent record of buying young players and developing them.

Liverpool have not really had any decent players come through since Carragher and Gerrard, they've also suffered from Rafa's poor buying. Liverpool fans have shown loyalty to him, and they understand he's had his hands tied in recent seasons, but so did Wenger, yet he still has players other teams would want. Sadly for Liverpool this really isn't the case bar three or four.

The side I saw Rafa put out v my team at Fratton Park was an object example of LFC's demise. The fact we won reasonably comfortably at a time when we were really struggling magnified it.

No money and a manager who doesn't know how to win the league, and looks like he's lost his drive, means the best LFC can hope for is cup runs. To think my Pompey team has been to the new Wembley 5 times and Liverpool are still yet to visit shows even in the cups -it's not happening.

Liverpool do have a proud past, but even the weight of that is no longer a factor as the simple fact remains that the best teams win leagues and people as old as 25 will have no recollection of Liverpool doing that, and worse for their fans, don't look like doing it anytime soon.

Football needs a strong Liverpool, but I just can't see where a strong Liverpool side is going to come from.

If I was the Americans and wanting to sell the club it would make sense to me to speculate to accumulate. A Liverpool side that maybe struggling in the League and possibly in Europe is not much of an attractive investment. If the Americans gave Benitez more money, allowing him to buy better players, strengthen the squad and challenge at home and abroad to me thats a more viable and attractive investment opportunity, especiall if they are wanting the sort of money its claimed they want.
Historically Liverpool are a sucessful club and that will always interest investors, but I would imagine for those wanting to invest hundreds of millions of pounds then they need to be seen as a successful club in the present climate.

What struck me - along with many others up and down this land - was that the Pompey supporters where just that, Supporters - maybe not all, but the majority at least. Nothing worse than the booboys you get at many grounds who sit/stand there shouting abuse at the opposition all game instead of getting behind their own team and singing their praises instead. Pompey had more supporters than booboys. It really does make the difference. We may be a rotten side that could only manage a Champions League quarter final and a seventh placed league finish, but we'll be there next season trying to get back into that top four, going on those cup runs and I'll be cheering my team all the way. Why? Because I'm a supporter not a booboy and hey - it could be so much worse, couldn't it?

Not sure they really do want to sell. Don't forget the purchase doesn't seem to have cost them a penny up until now. Even their visits to Anfield for games are claimed as expenses from the club - £2m+ to date. £45M has been spent on the new stadium, with only a few holes dug to survey the land - mind those computer graphics showing the new stadium must have cost a bit. Three years ago the debt was £44M, now £351M. The money hasn't gone on new players, hasn't gone on building work for the new ground, hasn't even gone on interest payments (the club only payed £21M interest last year). The club was in profit three years ago, £54.9M loss last year. The main issue is the asking price - £600-£800M - they only paid £202M! So they expect someone to pay £600M + take on £350M debt + pay for the new stadium = no sale. The addition of a few new players won't make it any more of an attractive deal. Maybe we'll have to go to the wall before a realistic price can be fixed.

VIOLENT gang members are being sent on a dream trip to the World Cup finals under a taxpayer-funded jaunt to turn them into “role models”.
Fury erupted after it emerged that nine tearaways are flying out to South Africa, where they will be handed tournament tickets and taken on tourist trips.
A Government-funded police initiative has paid £10,000 towards sending the Glasgow gang members – aged 16 to 21 – on the trip with Church of Scotland youth workers.

Now this is probably sensationalised a little, being as its the UK media, but surely I am not the only one to see that this is messed up. The money could have been used to send disabled kids, under privileged kids or others to see something they might not see ever again. Yet someone has the bright idea to send yobs to South Africa. They claim it will turn their lives around, more likely it will show the little tossers that crime does pay and that they don't actually need to alter their lifestyle.

You maybe right, they seem to want an awful lot of money for the club, so it could be a scam. They can then say well we tried to sell but no one wanted to buy so you are stuck with us. I can understand making a profit, but trying to make such a profit is just not feasible in this financial climate. I was not aware of the debt and how much goes out of the club, so as you say a few new players won't really make much of a difference.
I see also that this new UEFA rule coming into play in the future will currently affect Liverpool along with Aston Villa, Chelsea and Manchester City as their outgoings currently are bigger than their incomings. Maybe that has something to do with the lack of money they want to spend.

You notice they don't mess around with the Brazil kit, they wouldn't be game.
I like that plain white England strip, looks very retro.
Simple colours are the go for national teams, in my view. The last one is the Australian shirt from 1974, from Adidas. Too much to ask them to do something like this, apparently.

Want a retro shirt for the Australian team?
How about this one?
