Default Congrats to Kazuyoshi; as a question for you Brits

Kazuyoshi Miura scores at 50 to beat Sir Stanley Matthews’ record

Quote:
The Japanese striker, Kazuyoshi Miura, has become the oldest professional footballer to score a competitive goal, beating Sir Stanley Matthews’ 52-year-long record.
Miura, nicknamed “Kazu”, turned 50 last month and scored the only goal of the game as Yokohama FC recorded a 1-0 win over Thespa Kusatsu in J-League 2.
Quote:
The former Japan international, now in his 32nd season, Miura made his professional debut in 1986 with the Brazilian side Santos
*****

And now for a question for you Brits about the following sentence that is the last one in the article: does 'despite' have a different meaning than what I think it does?

Quote:
Despite scoring 55 goals in 89 appearances for his country, Miura is still remembered as one of the best Japanese players never to appear at a World Cup.
The Cambridge dictionary says:without beinginfluenced or preventedby

The Oxford dictionary says: Without being affected by; in spite of (when used as a prepostion) or Contempt; disdain (as a noun)

The sentence makes almost perfect sense.

What they mean to say is:

"He's actually remembered more for not appearing in any world cup for his country than he is remembered for scoring 55 goals in 89 appearances in non-world-cup games for his country".

In other words:

"The memory of him has not been influenced as much by his 55 goals in 89 appearances for his country, than it has been influenced by the fact that he never played in any world cup for his country".

They are stretching a point, but what was written does make some sense.

The last time Spurs won an F.A. Cup semi-final was 1991 when they beat The Arse at Wembley to stop them doing the double.

This time they plat Chelski (and we all know what they're trying to do)

Fifty years ago when Spurs won the cup, they beat Chelski at Wembley.
They beat Millwall on the way to the final, they also won 6-0 at WHL in the quarter-final!!!!!!! Spooky????????????????

No not really.....It's just me 'Clutching at straws'

It's good that we avoided Arse because that leaves open the glorious possibility of a Norph Landan derby cup final. But I would have preferred Shitty to Chelski as a SF opponent. We've got a psychological edge on Shitty at the moment, I feel.

On the other hand, Shitty have the sort of game that could tear the fragile Arse midfield apart.

Hopefully, we can quench the terrible 6 game losing streak in FA Cup semi-finals. But if we're the first of the 2 matches played and we win, could I really see myself hoping for Arse to win so as to set up a dream final? Or would I be hoping for a Shitty win so as to get a repeat of the 81 final, where I was standing behind the goal into which Ricky Villa popped his wonder dribble?

No way! With the Arse currently in "crisis club" mode, I would dread their chances against the Spuds....

Hell, I'm not even sure they'll get past City in the semi...
Hopefully though, Arsenal v City should be a good game for the neutral

Default Champions League - Round of 16 - 2nd Leg

Leicesters fairytale revival reaching new heights

2-0 up over 10 man Sevilla (red card Nasri 74min) - 3-2 over 2 legs

http://www.bbc.com/sport/live/football/38926206

How often do you see a 10 man team score against 11 - too often

78min - Sevilla missed penalty

I do wonder at some of the expert commentators

Leicester in control - 17 shots to 13 with just 30% possession

Following the footsteps of Chelsea 2012
