Default Documentary: After Porn Ends

AFTER PORN ENDS
Found this 2010 Doc on NetFlix (streaming US)
For VEF fans its a must-see

Interviews with dozens of people in porn, mostly 80's and 90's, and what their lives are like today. The range is startling as it mixes those that returned to the biz (Mary Carey), still in the biz (Seka and Nina Hartley), those that left and are happy about the experience (Asia Carrera) and those that wish they never did it (Houston).

Not only do we get to see and hear them as they are today, but also a chance to get inside their heads and get a glance of what the experiences was/is like for them. Really rather cool.

Edited well enough so its not a repetitive slog and with production values often greater than the films they starred in.

Worth seeking out.

what would you say was the slant of the film? what was the director trying to say with it? That porn stars are "just like you and me and they are fine after porn"? Or that porn is an industry mostly for the young and viciously exploits film stars and ruthlessly spits them out the other end, forcing them to make ends meet in other ways?

Interesting.

I would love to see it just to see what these stars are up to and how they look today

I watched it a few months ago and recall it having balance as User5953 speaks to. I can't remember whom it was, but one of the gals (Raylene?) was so pleased with her husband to have escaped it finally yet at the end of the film, she was back into it due to financial pressure I believe. I thought that was a tough part as it revealed how many females seem to almost be in porn like a bad drug habit (although I know that can be the catch-22 the other way around with addiction).

horny jack

One of the strengths of the film is that it doesn't really have a slant. It pretty much let's the people tell about their experiences of Life pre, during and post porn from an unbiased POV.

Everyone goes into it knowingly and freely. The truth being you get a career window of a few years (more if you are really lucky) but then have to live with being recognized as a porn star by the general public for the rest of your life. Which seems to be the part most have trouble dealing with.

But the film runs the gammet: From those that did it for the money to be a better single Mom and quit when they got an inheritance; to those that loved the fast life of sex, drugs and easy money. Some are still doing what they love to do.

Bottom line: Most that went into the biz didn't exactly choose to leave behind an Ivy League MBA career path for star aspirations with Vivid. Yes some are naive but everyone pretty much knows the score when they take the plunge. That there's no going back is the common thread.

I found it to be interesting and fairly balanced. I especially liked the things that Nina Hartley had to say. She is one who has always been comfortable and happy with what she does. But she also recognized and felt great sympathy for those who fell into it or felt trapped in it. She acknowledged that it is NOT in the nature of most women to be capable for fucking for fun or profit without feeling some guilt or remorse.

Seka was another one what was just fine with her career. She seemed to still have the open, "swinging" nature of her heyday. I think being raised in Europe where the puritain influence of "sex is naughty" is not as strong as it is in the US or UK.

One lady, I forget which, scoffed at the idea that she could ever really ENJOY sex on camera. She talked about how fans would tell her how they loved her because her orgasms were real etc. She just laughed, and took pride in her acting ability instead.

Tiffany Million.

Yeah, I found it really interesting, and surprisingly touching at times. It definitely lets you make up your own mind about the business. But seeing as how the stories are told by the people involved... you can't help but see them as people, since... they are people--no need for slant.

And that said, it made me think of how I've thought of porn stars, and the prejudices American society has about them. Heck, I've know tons of guys (and who hasn't) who were 10,000 times more pervy/horny/slutty than any porn star, and yet it is the porn star with the bad rep. I guess you can bang 10,000 women like Wilt Chamberlain and be forgiven since he didn't get paid for it, but accept cash and you're a pariah forever.

And I kind of hate to admit this, but while I was very happy for Crissy Moran and her exit from porn... it just made me want to see her get fucked really hard all the more. The same with Stephanie Swift and her involvement in XXX church. I guess I'm a bad person. :/

It's a good film for somebody who doesn't know anything about the porn industry. Most people who are porn fans -- or porn haters -- or both at the same time will find they're familiar with the main points. The attention feels good at first. Drugs are tempting. Society stigmatizes you. The money is good, but it doesn't last forever. Etc. Etc. Stylistically speaking, I found the interviews got monotonous towards the end.

I also found the representative sample was small and tended towards big stars who managed to land on their feet. Bill Margold and Luke Ford talked about porn destroying people's lives, but the documentary itself doesn't explore it much. Of course, a lot of the performers who got destroyed aren't alive to tell about it.

John Leslie seemed like a cool guy. Randy West reminded me of Sylvester Stallone. I liked Asia Carrera, Tyfanny Million, and Nina Hartley. I thought Shelley Lubben was a hypocrite and Mary Carey was a dufus. The one I felt sorry for was Houston because of all that botched surgery. Talk about fish lips!

WHEW!

I read the title of this thread and thought that it was about the end of porn - you know, through government regulation or something like that...

...man, am I relieved!

I just saw this doc on Netflix and found it really balanced. Although I'm not a fan of Nina Hartley as a porn star, I believe she summed it up best; if you're OK with being naked and having sex on screen it will be good for you but if it really doesn't agree with you you'll be screaming to get out and find any excuse you can...like Shelly Lubben.

I found it interesting that I really gained some respect for Randy "captain dribbles" West. He seemed like a really cool guy and I was a bit shocked at the end that he suffered a heart attack. I was then relieved to hear he recovered completely. Strange for a guy that can't stand him in a porn scene. He really seemed like a nice and balanced person.

Raylene (Again, not a huge fan of her scenes) seemed like a really sweet person and, as she doesn't like the industry, I hope she gets out for good soon.

Good doc and I would highly recommend it to the membership.
