Windows 10?

WHY IS MS giving free copies of windows 10, I just turned on my desktop pc after letting it set for 8 months and after 2 days of updating it showed the icon for a free update to windows 10 it now has windows 7 and I`m torn about letting it update after reading this whole thread.

There is a very good reason why they are doing this... To get free testers (aka unpaid lab rats)....lol.

Every new OS they bring out is riddled with holes, which is why they quickly offer updates and patches to cover them up. Sadly, Win8 was so bad they ended up having to bring out the 8.1 upgrade to not only fill big holes, but also to give users some form of start menu back so they could navigate with more ease. As someone who has to use Win8/8.1 daily I find it easy, but I can fully understand someone coming to it and having trouble.

As I understand it, MS are offering you the choice with the new Win10 OS to have either the same tile format or a version of the more preferred Win7 layout. But having not yet had time to fully check it out for myself, I cannot confirm if this is the case.

When you're ready, you can get rid of the Windows 10 nag by going into delete programs and finding Windows Update KB3035583. Delete it, restart and the nag will be gone. Do remember to go into Windows Update to hide that update or it will be reinstalled.

Having done the Windows 10 thing (and gotten rid of it) I do have a suggestion. If you are interested in playing with it (and I use the term precisely) then download Win 10 and install it on a separate drive (a 60 Gb drive should work just fine). Don't put it on the same drive as Win 7! If you decide you don't like 10 and want to go back to 7 then its just a simple hd swap. Takes only a couple of minutes. But if you let MS install 10 over 7 then you have hours of work reinstalling 7 (provided you have the Win 7 disk).

IF you do it that way Win 10 is worth playing with. But there are A LOT of problems. I finally gave up when they couldn't keep the darn Start button working the way it should. Finally went away completely.

Let me know if you have any problems deleting the specific update.

You know, the more I think about it, I completely agree with Pharoegypt about Win 10 being a BETA project for the average computer user. Not sure that is a really good idea.

I "think" I'm a fairly advanced PC user. Had my first class in the early 80's, used to teach corporate OS and app use, have built and maintained a lot of machines over the years and am generally regarded as the "go to" person for some problems my friends have with these infernal machines. So BETA testing an OS for me is not a real big deal. Something goes wrong and I can fairly easily repartition, reformat and reinstall an OS and apps. Not a big deal, I've done it a thousand times or more.

But having an "average computer user" become a BETA tester? I think MS is going to be getting a lot of people in a lot of trouble they won't be able to get themselves out of. That may be good for me as I'll make a few extra bucks reinstalling all of the user's stuff but, if I was the "average computer user" I'd be thinking about suing.

That's what the EULA is for, to take away your right to sue the company that trashes your several thousand dollar essential piece of equipment.

It's the people who lose years of photographs and music that I feel sorry for.

I had a woman in the other day, her laptop was in a right state, and try as I might I just couldn't retrieve her data, even though I did rescue her laptop back to its normal usable state in time. She told me (through a flood of tears) that this had meant her losing pictures of her recently diseased father, and she hadn't been prudent enough to back-up those images as yet. Others have spent days ripping all their CD's to I-Tunes or WMPlayer etc, only to lose it all just after they've sold on or binned all their shelf space hungry CD's.

I put the issue down to yet another moody update for Win8.1, and it's only the most recent of dozens where this one update has forced the users laptop into an unending recovery loop, and a blue screen where none of the 3 options work. The only option was to force recovery via F4, and this sadly doesn't always allow for saving of data, more so when the user has already tried several times to fix the error themselves. Oddly, this error won't allow me to boot to a disc containing a VirtualOS where I can retrieve data like usual, and it's as frustrating for me as it is upsetting for clients.

Haven't run into that update yet. Could you tell us which one it is so we can avoid it?

I wish I could, but I've forgotten each time to make a note of it, but promise I will do the next one I get in. Some days it's so wild in here I forget my own name let alone complicated update strings.........

That's precisely how I cut down my own storage space. That and using empty disc spools with a lid for the ones I didn't care so much in having individual covers instead. As most of my cd's and dvd porn collection were either copies, or just something where the cover artwork meant nothing to me this was no problem.
