which also does a fine job of checking which audio/video codec is needed for playing a clip and whether the codec required is on your system or not.

if you have Win7 it's strongly recommended to install latest versions of K-Lite codecs packages after removing old codecs packages
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm - at both Win7 32-bit and 64-bit I recommend to install package "MEGA" - if you have Win7 64 bit please install package "64-bit", too
