At any rate, under no circumstances should the taxpayer be on the hook for euthanasia. Doctors are not there to kill folk. Palliative care isn't murder, but this is.
No wonder Europe is in decline, the European people can't even find within themselves the will to live, or even the will to quietly commit suicide, no, they insist that the taxpayers pay for it. It's utterly disgusting.
Comparing humans to pets is also quite disgusting.
"We talk about how awful it is that we can put a pat out of its agony, and complain that we can not do the same for those we love."<-that is one of the most morally repugnant things I've ever heard. That anybody would complain that the can't kill their poor old crippled auntie like they did to their poor old crippled dog is well beyond the pale.
In fact there's a Belgian paralympic athlete that recently said she is still alive thanks to our euthanasia program (as it prevented her to have to commit suicide before she turns into a vegetable), she just won silver in Rio.
Personally i think the option for euthanasia is a merciful one (not an light choice, of course, and not easy to obtain).

For all clarity: the request for euthanasia is only possible for yourself (it's not a means to get rid of your old auntie)

Also i don't think it's legal in most european countries (but i haven't checked)

And also i don't think tax payers have to pay for this.

As for those who are against it: good news, you don't have to do it to yourself if you don't want to!

For those who care, here are some details on the Belgian euthanasia law (valid since 2002, that's 14 years already, waw...)
I have to translate this and some terms are not easy, but i'll do my best:

- euthanasia has to be done by a doctor (not a nurse or a family member), the doctor has to be certain that the patient was legally competent at the moment he (or she) filled in their will.

- the doctor has to be certain that the patient is in a medically hopeless and uncurable situation (with constant physical or mental suffering)

- the doctor must ask the advice of another doctor (who is independent from himself and from the patient)

- if the doctor is convinced that the patient will not die soon, he must consult another doctor. This doctor has to be a psychiatrist or a specialist in the illness of the patient.

- for non-terminal patients, there has to be at least 1 month between the written request of the patient and the euthanasia.

- in case of a will that has been written long ahead, the requester needs to have 2 witnesses (of which one has no 'material ties' with the requester) to sign his request (this is for cases of Alzheimer etc). Requests always must be written down, with a date and a signature, though it doesn't have to be an official document.

As of June 2016 , human euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, and Luxembourg. Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Canada, and in the US states of Washington, Oregon, Vermont, Montana, and California.

hardly the whole of Europe.

Maybe if I was Belgian I'd want to be put down - according to a survey, 60% of Belgians wish that they were born somewhere else.

Talking of Belgium I see they have unveiled the first and only beer pipeline. It delivers beer from the city centre brewery to the bottling plant on the outskirts of the city. This means they avoid using trucks in the historic parts of the city and potential damage. It cost €4m to build and the beer travels for 2 miles. It was partly crowdfunded and anyone who gave the maximum amount, €7500 was rewarded with 1 bottle of beer everyday for life.

Was going to do a late night/morning review of the Paralympics but there has been an explosion in New York City which followed on from a pipe bomb in New Jersey hours before. The NYPD report casualties and the NYFD report 3 dead.

On the other hand I can remember at least one occasion where a lorry driver saved me from my own stupidity, slowing down when I had attempted a far too optimistic overtake and giving me somewhere to go to avoid on-coming traffic. I never even saw the man's face, but he saved my life IMHO (he did give me a blast of the horn as a comment on my driving). I think we are all stupid sometimes, and that quite a few accidents are averted because one of the parties was really switched on and compensated for the stupidity of the other party. I try to drive for the others as well as for myself and I think this pays off.
