We cook it either Indian style (2 ways) or cook it greek style with chicken as Kotopolou me balmes a kind of one pot stew using chicken on the bone, tinned tomatos, herbs, olive oil and okra. Indian style, if they are large we split them and stuff them with a masala of onions fried with green chili and spices such as corriander and cumin. After stuffing, we hold them togther with a skewer and either shallow fry or deep fry in oil. You can spray oilve oil on them and bake them in a very hot oven to keep the fat level down. If they are small, I fry a chopped onion, add chilis and powdered spices, corriander and cumin and then add chopped tomatos before finally adding the okra, cook for perhaps 10 minutes and serve with an indian chick pea or lentil daal and frsh chapatti. Okra is my all time favourite Indian vegetable dish. Edite to add, I spelled out the UK interpretation of the word 'Asian' as Pakistani, Indian, Bengali, I could have added Singalees as well. In the USA 'Asian' means more indo-china such as Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand as far as I am aware Last edited by dbailey; November 26th, 2009 at 03:06 PM.. |

Was taken OUT ! (But not permanently since as you can see i`m here typing ) , last night to
There were three of us and it was a business thing so very uncomfortable with forced small talk and inquiries about each others health , when none of us actually cared how the other person was getting on . They just cared about whether i could finish the work they were going to give me , while i was only cared about them paying me on time ! Anyway as you`ve probably guessed from the photo the food was expensive , they also gave you pretty little of it as they want to try and make you order extra chips and veg at 3.95 a pop !. Well that`s what i figured. Still i didn`t play their game , yes even if it wasn`t me paying. Fact i tried to subtly dissuaded my employer against excepting the offer of "Olives to nibble on while you wait " from the too smiley waiter . Since as soon as the guy did the waiter wrote something on his order pad , guess what it was ?. Yes 5.95 for olives , no make that 19 olives to be exact as i counted the salty lumps when they arrived. Ok it`s a food thread so onto the food , which was tiny in portion and i`m afraid to say tasteless in execution. I hate eating out in restaurants , especially ponce ones and here`s why. Across the entire menu all i could find that looked semi get down-able was a chicken liver parfait . Which turned out to be a thimble sized mousse accompanied by four thin slices of toast , an (Singular) Italian lettuce leaf and a weeny pot of cranberry compote = Price 6.95 ! Next i`d ordered the only pork dish available , that being (They`d claimed ) roast pork with crackling with fried onions , erm on a bed of lentils stuff and pan fried sweet potato wedges. What i got after fifty minutes wait turned out to be a fatty ordinary sized pork chop , with a thin bit of hard skin. Plus a quarter of a fried red onion. Also as you guessed the lentils were rubbish and i thought undercooked also the sweet potato boring = Price 11.95 ! Sweet finally , and sure the choices might have appealed to Cliff Richard or Dale Winton () but they left me cold. So much so i plumped for that age old favourite chocolate ice cream , well triple chocolate ice cream they called it. Thirty nine minutes later it arrived , yes thirty nine as the waiter had forgotten we`d ordered dessert !. Ok it arrived and big surprise it was a damn Lilliputian helping again. Tasted alright , i thought. Then half an hour later walking around the city my throat became really sore , it went off after a hot drink when i got back home but i`m sure there was something in that ice cream that hurt my throat Oh and when i got home i heated up a Lasagna from Tesco`s , decent flavour and filling = Price 3.95

Can you name this palace of gastronomy for us, GS? It sounds terrific and I wouldn't want to miss out on knowing what it's called and where it is, just in case I'm ever in the same town with people who want to wine and dine me. I would hate to miss out on your hard earned knowledge here.

Its called the Library bcause it is on the site of the first ever public library in Norwich. I had a steak there a few months ago and sent it back....bloody awful. Also its reviews are terrible. Avoid at all costs!
By the way GS a treble Bullseye is 150, 3 treble 20's are 180.....sorry, the pedant pills are wearing off.

Lentils - love them, but I have to stay clear off the crowd after dinner cause I may kill one or two with some funny odor like invisible clouds of unpleasantness.
Any drinking allowed in the library then? Or were you hitting at the librarian GS m8?

Worst steak I ever had was at a place called The Comfort Hotel in Great Yarmouth (memo: any hotel which has to use the word ''comfort'' in its name is on a par with a sovereign country which uses the word ''Democratic'' in its label on the map of the world). I was with two other friends and we all ordered the steak: one of us asked for rare, one medium and one well done. It came to all three of us in the same state of ancient leathery inedible toughness. I doubt if it would have made it in a bouef bourguignon after 24 hours marinading in red wine, thats how tough it was. I would have been better off trying to eat the tyre from a Massey Ferguson tractor.

The worst steak I ever had was at the Barnsdale Lodge hotel on Rutland water. I had a rump steak that was almost 40% fat and gristle.
On my previous two jobs I used to stay away from home 3 or 4 nights per week. I woould have little control over which hotel as I had to book via an agency. I could specify the town or area and if a large city like London or Birmingham I used to specify the A road that I used for travel. They put me in so many terrible places that I complained about, in the end they let me ask for named hotles in certain towns. In general I prefer Premier Travel Inns from the budget range as the food at the steak houses attached (Whitbread) was always consistent and breakfast was the best. I also enjoyed a lot of Best Westerns which are a franchise. The worst hotel was in Margate!! and one of the nicest on The Lees at Folkstone. This one has the best steaks. I had great food at The George on Newmarket Road in Norwich. |
