There is more to it than just tariffs. As your hero Farage openly admits, the grand post-Brexit strategy is to devalue your currency to become more competitive on the World markets. That is very similar to the beggar-thy-neighbor policy of the Thirties.

Hoss, this is where I get the arse-ache with Remain supporters, time after time. I never ever make this sort of cheap shot at others just for supporting Remain, though I will return fire if anyone traduces me or the nation to which I belong. I very sincerely dislike Nigel Farage and I really don't like it when you suggest he is my hero, merely because we are both in favour of Leave. I'd take it as personal favour if you will agree never to suggest that Nigel Farage is any hero of mine, ever ever again.

Thanks.

Whenever Britain executes the action of leaving and gets past the changes and disruption which will be quite inevitable in the first weeks, the currency markets will have an opportunity to assess the new status-quo. That will very probably lead to at least a partial recovery in the GBP on the currency trading markets for one simple reason - markets prefer even bad news to uncertainty. Any idea that leaving the EU will affect the GBP into the medium and long term is highly questionable, and certainly I wouldn't rely on Nigel Farage's judgement.

Nigel Farage (if indeed he did propose a deliberate currency devaluation) may have forgotten also that monetary policy is independently controlled by the Bank of England. They will decide whether or not to print money in order to weaken the currency. People such as Nigel Farage have nothing to say on that.

Just by the way, I note that the economic tragedy of the 1930s was caused and amplified by deflationary economic policy, just the opposite of printing money and devaluing the currency - which in 1929-33 would have been exactly the right thing to do.

Fruit-picking is an outdoor job, which means that it starts after sunrise and ends before sunset. A 10-hour day seems to be the maximum, and I assume most farms respect the UK law and don't go beyond the 48-hour weekly limit.

The pay is low, because it's a low-skill job, but the salary is not what deters British people from applying for these jobs. In fact, a fruit-picker earns slightly more than a pub worker or a fast-food employee.

Here are a few articles explaining why fruit-picking is unattractive for British people:
https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/brexit-a...554452.article
https://www.bigissue.com/latest/why-...rs-pick-fruit/
https://inews.co.uk/news/uk/strawber...ickers-brexit/

To summarise, fruit-picking is a physically demanding job. You have to crouch, bend and stretch to pick fruits. That has an impact on your back and knees. Cook is also a stressful job, but the reason why Brits prefer that kind of job to fruit-picker is because a cook can still dream to become the next Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver, having his own TV show or setting up his own flourishing business. There's no such hope with fruit-picking. Brits are not lazy but they see fruit-picking as a shameful, demeaning job (that's also true in other wealthy countries), while working as a cook is a bit more glamorous. You may say that working in a fast food is not glamorous either, but at least you have a shelter and don't have to work in the mud or the rain like fruit-pickers.

Another reason is commuting. Most farms are far from cities where the Brits live. Unless you have a car and are willing to drive an hour or half an hour for a poorly paid job, becoming a fruit-picker doesn't make sense at all.

And then there's the seasonal nature of the job. Some fruits and veggies only grow in the summer, or the spring or the autumn. So you may have to move from one farm to another. It's not like when you are an employee in a company steadily providing you work in the same place. Social and economic stability would be an issue for a full-time fruit-picker.

Just on a factual point, the UK fruit harvest begins in June, with strawberries, gooseberries, redcurrants and rhubarb. In June the daylight envelop peaks at over 17 hours long, and in northern Scotland and the Scottish northern isles that exceeds 19 hours.

Have you ever had that from me, Mal? Even once? Certainly not for merely arguing the case. I strongly believe in the right to discuss opposed views without name-calling. If I call somone out for treason or disloyalty it will be for actions taken, not for having an opinion.

I'd be bored shitless if no ever disagreed with me. It jus so happens that I am not a supporter or fan of Nigel Farage and I want to make that extremely clear.
