I've had experiences where I have felt a presence near me. Usually, these experiences have happened late at night, when I'm walking through a room in a semi-darkened house (like, say, falling asleep in one room watching tv, waking up and then going to the bedroom).

When these instances have happened, it hasn't been in the form of something tangible I can explain. It hasn't been a ghostly vision or apparition that I could actually see. Sometimes there have been brief noises, but nothing in the rooms have ever been moved or disturbed (and this has happened in multiple regions/houses, so it wasn't the case of a certain house being haunted).

These encounters have never felt malevolent or benign. I'm not even sure I necessarily believe in the supernatural in terms of the dead contacting the living, or ghosts, or religious spirits, or whatever you want to call it. Which is what makes these encounters so odd to me, in that I'm not necessarily prone or susceptible to buying into such things existing in the first place: I don't dismiss the possibility out of hand totally, but I could subconsciously just be messing with my own mind.

I think most of the time our brains are messing with us.

This will be a long one, so be prepared.

Where I went to college, there was an old cavalry fort northwest of town. It dated to the 1830's. It wasn't a fort like you see in the movies with the wooden palisade walls and block houses on the corners. It was just a collection of buildings in the same area. In the middle was a parade ground. In the middle of that parade ground was a flag pole, with a street light on it...to light the flag at night. On the north side of the parade ground were cabins that served as the officers quarters. On the west side was an old two story rock barracks that was just a shell of a building. The outer walls are still there, but the second floor and roof are gone. On the south side was what was called the wooden barracks. It was two stories as well. But it was only rock on the first floor. The second floor was made entirely out of wood. Around that barracks was a wooden walkway about wide enough for 3 or 4 people to walk abreast. At night you could see the parade grounds because of the street light, and the sides of the buildings facing that light would be lit up to some extent. Everything else was shadowy.

We had heard of ghost stories about the fort. You can find them online if I gave you the name of the fort. So being crazy college kids, we would go there at night hoping to see a ghost. We had been there at least twice and had never seen a thing. Usually it would be a sizable group requiring two cars. One night it just myself and two friends made a trip to the fort. We were standing in the rock barracks looking towards the east. One friend was standing right beside me, another one was about 50 feet from us. As I was looking out at the parade ground, I starting hearing a clip clop clip clop sound coming from the wooden barracks. The sound was fairly loud. I had heard nothing at all the other trips we had made to the fort. The hair on the back of my neck is standing up as I stare towards the wooden barracks, wondering what the heck is going on. The clip clop sound stops, I see the outline of a person step out of the shadows into the light, do a 180, and then disappear back into the shadows, then the clip clop sound starts again. I could clearly see a head and shoulders, but no details on cloths or anything else because of the lack of light. I'm freaking out at this point. I'm not sure if I actually saw something, or are my senses playing tricks on me.

After we get back to the car I ask my friends if they saw or heard anything. One of them said he saw a something step out of the shadows and turn around and go back. The other said he could hear the clip clop sound I had heard. So at that point I know I hadn't imagined it.

This was way back in the days before the internet. The only source of information back then was a library. So, I go to the colleges library the next afternoon, look up ghosts stories for the state of Oklahoma, look through those books and magazines for ghost stories at that fort, nothing. For years after that every time I would come across a magazine article, or newspaper article, on ghost stories in Oklahoma I would check it out, still nothing. Then one day, maybe 15 years later, I see a headline on the cover of a magazine about ghost stories in Oklahoma. Open up the magazine, find the page the stories was on, turn to it, find a story about ghosts at that fort. One of the ghost stories was of a soldier's ghost that had been seen walking guard duty at that wooden barracks. Story said that he had been ordered to walk guard duty one night, as punishment, when it was cold and raining, and he caught pneumonia and died. Now if that's not what I saw and heard, I don't know what it was. One thing that occurred to me as I read that story. That fort was a cavalry fort. Cavalry soldiers wore heavy heeled boots. Those heavy heel boots would've made a heck of a clip clop clip clop sound on that wooden walkway.

I used to consider it a brain-loop, but there is actually a term for it (of course there is): déjà rêvé.
I recall a psychology lecturer I had at uni telling me it's a sort of memory glitch. That as you experience an event in real time, you are simultaneously remembering it just as you would some past event.

I think that most of what is termed the "Paranormal" is just the normal world turning out to be a lot weirder than We thought it was.The Human brain is hardwired to see/hear things,It is susceptible to electromagnetism amongst many other things.

I'll tell one more ghost story. This one is actually second hand....sorta.

Place I used to work at sat over an old coal mine that dated from the late 1800's/early 1900's. I had two people tell me about seeing the ghost of a coal miner, standing in the exact same spot in the building, with about 90% similarities in their descriptions. Two really spooky things about the stories. Neither one of those two people ever met each other. Both worked nights, when it was only them around, so there wasn't any like "office gossip" to affect their stories. The other thing is, I'm not sure if either of the two of them knew that the building sat over an old coal mine. I doubt that they did, but I can't be certain on that. I never saw anything in all the time I worked there. But when you have two people describe the exact same thing to you, and they never met each other, that is something that is difficult to dismiss.
