Default The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

This book tells a familiar story in a completely different way and in different timelines. A present-day young girl learns why her father is so mysterious; a university student tracks a dangerous artefact to it's startling origins; a noble of an ancient land strives to find his place in history. All these threads are finally joined together in a well-crafted denoument that left me thinking for days afterward.

Elizabeth Kostova writes extremely well, a pre-requisite for an author I know but rare these days, and has crafted a thought-provoking story that I go back to time and time again.

'The Hangman's tale' by Syd Dernley.

A fascinating and very interesting account of Syd's career as an assistant hangman, he worked with Albert Pierrepoint on numerous occasions.

'Conspiracy' by Anthony Summers.

A painstakingly detailed account of who might have assassinated JFK.

'Naff Motors' by Tony Davis.

A trip down memory lane for those of us of a 'certain age', a very humorous account of the crap cars we used to own!

Dispatches by Michael Herr.
A masterpiece of unconventional war reportage,Written in a style reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson. It takes the reader in a trip (In both senses of the word) into in the front lines,In jungles,Paddy fields and cities.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life, the Universe and Everything and So Long, And Thanks for All the Fish by Douglas Adams. I have the four books collected in a hardcover edition, which makes it convenient.

M*A*S*H and M*A*S*H Goes to Maine by Richard Hooker. The adventures of Hawkeye, Trapper, Duke, et al during the Korean War, and the first sequel where Hawkeye reunites his collegues from the 4077th in Maine and build a first-rate hospital.

Washington Goes to War by David Brinkley. Brinkley tells how Washington DC went from a sleepy Southern town that happened to be a national capital to one of the most important cities in the world in a very short time. Fun fact from the book: Until well into the 20th Century, being the British Ambassador to the United States was considered a hardship post due to the climate of the DC area.

A quotation from the book:

Quote:
