Default Medal of Honor

I'm not sure how this will be received, but here goes.

I' m watching the special ceremony for 24 Medal of Honor recipients.
I am so full of emotions I'm not sure if this will make any sense.
I am so proud of these men. I am humbled by their bravery. I am in awe
of their deeds.
To steal a line from "the Bridges of Toko -re"

WHERE DO WE FIND SUCH MEN?

A bit of factual background for non-American members who might not know what lies behind this ceremony.

And rightly so!

Default Medal of Honor criteria

the criteria are simple but unquestionably strict:

Must be proved beyond any doubt by testimony of at least two eyewitnesses.

So outstanding that it clearly distinguishes gallantry above and beyond the call of duty from lesser forms of bravery.

It must involve the risk of life.

And it must be the type of deed which, if it had not been done, would not have subjected the nominee to any criticism.

The Medal of Honor is the USA equivalent of our Victoria Cross.

General George Patton once said, "I'd sell my soul, to earn that decoration."

I think the VC has a bit higher standards than the MOH, tho...and the MOH is no slacker when it comes to the standards.

I know there was one VC winner early-mid WWII who was awarded it based on the testimony of the CO of a German sub he was attacking (because the plane was shot down during the battle and the crew lost). Can't remember if any MOH was awarded in part due to the testimony of the enemy.

That unique action is mentioned here:

I think that there were many who were unhappy when Douglas MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Douglas MacArthurs's father, William MacArthur jr. was also awarded the Medal of Honor in 1890, for actions during the American Civil War in 1863. They were the first father and son to be award the decoration. The other was to President Theodore Roosevelt (posthumous in 2001), and his son Brigadier-General Theodore 'Ted' Roosevelt III, who won his Medal of Honor in Normandy in 1944.

The highest rank of officer ever to be awarded the Victoria Cross is acting Brigadier - General, of which there are three, two during World War One, and one during World War Two.
General Sir Ian Hamilton, during a long and distinguished career, was twice strongly recommended for the Victoria Cross. Once as a young subaltern in Majuba in 1881, this was turned down on the grounds that he was young and would have other opportunities! He was again recommended for the award as a Brigadier-General in South Africa during the second Boer War in 1900. This was turned down on the grounds that he held too high a rank!

BTW. Lt. Col. George A. Custer's brother, Tom, won the Medal of Honor twice in 1865. Eighteen other US. servicemen have won the Medal of Honor twice.

Three British servicemen have won the Victoria Cross twice, two in World War One, and one in World War two.

Here's a really interesting Wiki link to their Medal of Honor page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor

Next Tuesday, 25th March, is National Medal of Honor Day in the US!
