And not just for those social afflictions either.

Oh, and I forgot to thank England for Gail McKenna.

I'd also like to thank those kilt wearing dudes who live up beyond Hadrian's Wall for the following:

Glenfiddich.
Glenmorangie.
The Glenlivet.

You deserve to be a peer of the realm, if you can make whiskey like that.

Words left over from the romans, bits of saxon and viking, lots of french and constantly evolving; the debt the rest of the planet owes for our language increases daily.

Yes it was April but nowadays Summer can start that early😀
I remember 1976 as the Summer of the invasion on the coast at least of hundreds of French ladybirds- you couldn't move for they covered roads, pavements and beach not to mention they flew about so despite the hot weather the windows had to remain closed. This was at Littlehampton btw.

Default That which was already said, plus:

- Diana Rigg and her Emmapeelers (heard she made them herself)
- T-Rex (still groovin' to the beat of Jeepster)
- The Proximity Fuze (invented in UK, developed in US; huge boost to WWII anti-aircraft accuracy)
- Jonathan Swift and his Boiled Baby Review
- Robert Burns (Japanese dept store customers wouldn't know when to leave w/o hearing Auld Lang Syne, daily)

- Sparks (American brothers, but had to go to England and get a British backing band to become semi-famous)

Default British Snobbery Revisited

It is the seventieth anniversary of Partition. In 1947, by the insistence of Jinnah and the Moslem League, British India was divided in Moslem and Not Moslem. The result was widespread communal violence and the deaths of thousands.

The Guardian
has commemorated this event with a subheading that continued "... violence unknown for centuries" without as far as I could tell, an explanation for why that was. British rule.

A friend went climbing in Ladakh in the 70s. An old man he met enquired politely "When are the British coming back?"

Always something of a racket and so forth, huge parts of the world were once ruled by young Englishmen with fountain pens and a stiff upper lip*. If one thing has made the British Empire look quite so good it has been the history of the past seventy years or so; there are, it seems, worse things today than British snobbery.

*One such described how he had to try a case against an agitator in a remote posting, the court house surrounded by an angry mob come to support their hero. He bound the man over ('don't do it again; or not soon'). Afterwards they drank tea together and reminisced about their time 'deviling' in chambers at the Inner Temple ...
