Austria-Hungary The Council of Ministers holds a secret meeting at Berchtold’s home, deciding that Serbia must be brought to heel. They approve the wording of an ultimatum to be delivered on the 23rd, the day Poincaré is to depart from Russia. There is a press scare concerning the alleged “Great Serbia” conspiracy. Pre-mobilization measures are underway.
Britain King George V summons a conference to discuss the Home Rule problem.

Western Front There are minor German attacks at Verdun and Souchez.
Eastern Front The Russians are consolidating on the Narew. German troops are now attacking north and south of Warsaw. There is fierce fighting on the Lublin-Kholm line. Radom falls.
Russia The Tsar dismisses the unpopular reactionary Minister of Justice Shcheglovitov and replaces him with the moderate A. A. Khvostov. The empress is astonished that the Tsar would replace one of her (and Rasputin’s) favorites.
Italian Front The Italians take Hill 143.

July 19, 1916
Western Front, Somme German counterattacks continue. The British repulse an attack on Waterlot Farm. The French gain south of Estrees.
Western Front, Elsewhere Believing the Germans are close to a retreat at the Somme, the British commanders in Flanders have decided that opening another offensive will hasten the demoralization of the German armies. The objective of the attack is Aubers Ridge and the village of Fromelles. At 11:00, the British begin the usual preliminary bombardment. By noon, the Germans begin an effective counterbattery fire. The late afternoon infantry attack meets heavy German resistance. 8th Australian Brigade manages to make headway and to hold an advance position through the night, but at the cost of 5500 casualties.
Egypt Kressenstein leads a large Turkish force into Sinai. The British have been assembling a force at Romani in anticipation of this.
Russia The Empress appeals for the dismissal of the anti-Rasputin Foreign Minister Sazanov.
Persia The Russians are defeated and driven back north of Kermanshah.

July 19, 1917
Eastern Front General Max Hoffman, effectively commanding the Eastern Front, begins the Austro-German counteroffensive in Galicia. Russian positions near Zloczow are pierced, largely due to insubordination by the troops.
German East Africa The 3/KAR attacks Liebermann at Narungombe, defended by eight companies and 48 machine guns. Initially the attack founders in a swamp and, by noon so many officers have been killed that African NCO’s command most of the platoons and companies. The Germans counterattack with bayonets, but the KAR stand firm. As the sun sets, the Germans attack again and are again held. During the night, Liebermann and his men disappear into the bush.
Russia There is an assassination attempt on Kerensky. By the end of the day, order has been restored in Petrograd and the Bolshevik leadership goes underground. Lenin goes into hiding in Finland.

July 19, 1918
Western Front The French 5th and 9th Armies, along with two British divisions, join the counteroffensive. The French and Americans advance on the Soissons-Thierry line, taking Vierzy and Neuilly-St. Front. South of the Marne, the French retake Montvoison. Further north, the British capture Meteren.
War at Sea The armored cruiser San Diego is mined off Fire Island; only 6 crewmen are lost. The White Star liner Justicia is torpedoed off Ireland; 10 are lost.
Diplomatic Relations Honduras declares war on Germany.

Diplomatic Relations Tsar Nicholas II welcomes Poincaré and Viviani at the Kronstadt naval base. He later hosts the French leaders at a banquet at Peterhof Palace.
France The trial begins of Madame Caillaux, wife of a prominent opposition leader, for the murder of Monsieur Calmette on March 16. The sensational trial absorbs much public attention.

I know a number of sources mention this event, but I think it may actually relate to a flight which took place on the 20th June 1916. It would be quite some coincidence if exactly the same thing happened on the 20th June and on the 20th July!

Diplomatic Relations The French ambassador in Berlin informs Paris of the first steps toward German mobilization. When he asks German foreign minister Jagow if he knows anything about the Austrian note being prepared, Jagow says no. He is lying; the German government is kept fully informed of Austrian intentions.
During the visit of President Poincaré to Russia, he realizes that Austria is planning something. He tells the French ambassador in St. Petersburg to support the Russians against Austria. “Sazonov must be firm and we must support him.”
Austria-Hungary Berchtold finesses the Emperor into approval of the ultimatum to Serbia.

Diplomatic Relations On being shown the ultimatum, German Deputy Foreign Minister Zimmermann declares that it is too sharp. The Austrians do not care; they know that Germany is in no position to withhold support.

Eastern Front A Russian attack on the Vilna front penetrates German lines to a depth of two miles, taking 1000 prisoners. Attempts to follow up this success are frustrated by indiscipline. The retreat in Galicia expands.
Russia Kerensky succeeds Prince Lvov as premier, retaining his existing posts. He insists on complete government control of the army, without interference from the Soviets.
Rumanian Front 2nd Rumanian and 4th Russian Armies attack at Marasti in an attempt to encircle and destroy parts of German 9th Army. The two sides are fairly evenly matched. Rumanian performance is much improved since 1916. The battle opens with a two-day barrage.

At 6:00 PM, Austrian Ambassador Baron Vladimir von Giesl delivers the ultimatum to the Serbian foreign ministry. Among ten demands, Austria stresses prosecution of the conspirators, with Austrian officials heading the investigation, and prohibition of anti-Austrian propaganda, with Austrian agents allowed to operate with Serbian officials in Serbia to suppress such propaganda. These and other terms are not only humiliating, but also require the sacrifice of Serbian sovereignty. Austria gives Serbia forty-eight hours to accept. German ambassadors are informed in a note from Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg stating “actions and demands of Austria-Hungary fully justified”.
Austria-Hungary Limited mobilization begins.
Britain Chancellor of the Exchequer David Lloyd George informs the House of Commons that Anglo-German relations are “better than they have been for years”.

Eastern Front The Germans storm the fortresses at Rozhan and Pultusk and cross the Narew. In Courland, the retreating Russians are overtaken and defeated at Shavli.
Italian Front The Italians bomb Innsbruck. Italian attacks on Monte Sabotino fail.
Adriatic Sea Austrian warships bombard Ortona.
Libya Several Italian garrisons are overcome and massacred by Senusi rebels; Turkish officers are often present or in command.

Western Front, Somme The British gain all of Longueval, but the Germans then retake a corner. The Australians at Pozieres rout German troops from the village and take control of the right side of the Albert-Bapaume road.
Eastern Front The Germans give some ground southeast of Riga. The Russians gain 12 miles near Kemmern.
Caucasus Russian troops are closing in on Erzinjan.

Eastern Front The undisciplined Russian retreat continues. Halicz falls and Stanislau is evacuated. The key supply center at Kozowa falls to the Austrians. The offensive in the Vilna sector quickly ends.

Diplomatic Relations Austria informs the powers of the terms of the note.Serbia appeals to the Tsar for support. Berchtold notes that “Any conditional acceptance or one accompanied by reservations, is to be regarded as a refusal.”

Western Front A German attack near Hooge is repulsed. French troops capture positions near Ban de Sapt in the Vosges.
War at Sea The first unassisted Q-Ship victory occurs when the Prince Charles sinks U-36.
Mesopotamia Although the Turks have fought fiercely the British succeed in capturing An Nasariyah. The battle has cost the Turks 1450 men, the British 533. The victory encourages Lord Hardinge, Viceroy of India and Nixon’s commander, to decide that Nixon should now move against Kut, one more step towards Baghdad.

July 24, 1916
Western Front, Somme There is heavy fighting at Pozieres. High Wood and Guillemont face persistent German counterattacks. The new offensive has pushed forward more than three miles along a six-mile front.
Western Front, Verdun The French take a redoubt west of Thiaumont.
Eastern Front Heavy fighting continues in the Riga sector.
Italian Front The Trentino counteroffensive continues. Monte Cismone is taken in a night attack.

Western Front The French and Americans approach Fere-en-Tardenois. The Germans are ordered to abandon the Marne salient. They withdraw skillfully and with most of their supplies.
Allied Planning Petain, Haig, and Pershing meet with Foch at his headquarters at the Chateau of Bombon in Melun. All clearly feel that the Allied forces now possess the initiative on the Western Front. Foch asserts that their objective should be to eliminate all of the German salients and in particular to free the railway lines serving the areas north and northeast of Paris. He accepts Pershing’s plan of attack against the St. Mihiel salient.
Albania Fighting continues even through gains are now few.

Hungary The Rumanians counterattack and by the 26th, the entire east bank of the Tisza is again under their control.
Egypt The violence subsides. Some 800 Egyptians have been killed in the violence.

July 24, 1920
Syria After several weeks of campaigning, French troops oust Emir Feisal from Damascus and take direct control over Syria/Lebanon. The territory is not fully pacified until 1923.
Belgium After a plebiscite, the Eupen and Malmedy districts are annexed to Belgium.

July 24, 1923
Turkey The Treaty of Lausanne ends the Greco-Turkish War. All remaining occupied Turkish territory is restored and the two countries agree to exchange their minority populations.

Korea Rival claims in Korea lead to war between China and Japan. A Chinese troop convoy is attacked at Phungtao by Japanese warships. One transport is sunk and the escorts severely damaged.

July 25, 1907
Korea The Japanese depose the Korean monarch and occupy Seoul. Rebellion spreads throughout the country but is gradually crushed over the next three years.

July 25, 1909
Technology Louis Bleriot flies an airplane across the English Channel.
Spain Black Week, an anarchist revolt in Barcelona, begins. It fails.

July 25, 1914
Diplomatic Relations After the Austro-Hungarians have refused the Russian request for an extension of the time limit, the Serbs, while mobilizing their armed forces, agree to meet all but one of the 10 demands outlined in the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum. Even the Kaiser considers this to be a major concession, but the Austro-Hungarians declare this to be unacceptable and Emperor Franz Josef declares martial law and orders the mobilization of his forces to begin the next day. Relations with Serbia are severed. Russia’s Tsar Nicholas II and commander in chief Grand Duke Nicholas agree to partial mobilization of their forces to protect Serbia from invasion, but are inclined to mediation. Austria-Hungary’s ally Germany threatens to begin mobilizing its own forces if Russia’s British and French allies to not halt Russia’s war preparations. Berlin is urging Vienna to immediate action before diplomacy can halt events.
The German ambassador in London assures Grey that Berlin had no foreknowledge of the Austrian ultimatum.
Serbia The government leaves exposed Belgrade for Nish.
Austria-Hungary General Radomir Putnik, commander of the Serbian Army, has been in Austria on leave and is arrested. News of the break with Serbia is met with popular enthusiasm.
Germany General Helmut von Moltke, army chief of staff, and Admiral Tirpitz, minister of the navy, return to Berlin early from their summer vacations.
France Orders are issued for the recall of a number of units overseas. Poincaré and Premier Viviani are urged to return home immediately. Paris reminds officials of their responsibility to arrest people on Carnet B if mobilization should be ordered. This is a list of some 2500 people, mostly Socialists, who, it is thought, might disrupt mobilization.

July 25, 1915
Eastern Front The Germans reach Posvol and Poneviezh on the Dvina and cross the Narew above Ostrolenka. German aircraft attempt to destroy key bridges over the Vistula.
Russia The Russian government evacuates factories at Riga and Warsaw.
Italian Front Though reinforced for this fresh assault along the entire Isonzo front, the Italian 3rd Army remains frustrated in its efforts to capture to Carso plateau, although securing Cappuccio Wood south of Monte San Michele. The Austrians, also reinforced, hold their lines.
Cameroon The French occupy Lomie. There is a native rising in the Zemen district. The Germans retreat.
Northern Rhodesia The Germans besiege an Anglo-Belgian garrison at Saisi.

July 25, 1916
Western Front, Somme German counterattacks at Longueval fail. Pozieres has been mostly cleared. Attacks begin along the Albert-Bapaume road toward Hill 160. The Allied commanders agree to launch a combined attack on the 30th.
Western Front, Elsewhere In Alsace, a German attack near Altkirch is repulsed.
Eastern Front The Russians advance on Brody. Linsingen on the Slonuvka is pushed back.
Macedonia The rebuilt Serbian army fights its first actions against the Bulgarians.
Caucasus The Russians take Erzinjan; this had been the forward base for Turkish operations in eastern Anatolia. The campaign has cost the Turks another 34,000 men.

July 25, 1917
Western Front Another German attack on the Aisne front stalls.
France At the end of a 2-day trial, a military court sentences Mata Hari for espionage. She is to be executed by firing squad.
Eastern Front The Russians abandon their positions in the Carpathians as the retreat continues.
Rumanian Front The Marasti offensive continues to gain ground, as reinforcements are sent to bolster the defense. Bad weather slows the advance. Russian VIII Corps announces they will go no further, on orders of “the Revolution”.

July 25, 1918
Western Front The French retake Main de Messiges, near Rheims.
Russia The Czech Legion captures Simbirsk.

July 25, 1920
Eastern Europe Soviet forces in Poland are outrunning their supply; the Russians are living off the country and so cannot halt. There are two main groups of Soviet forces; northeast of Warsaw and around Lvov. Pilsudski prepares a counterattack.

July 26, 1914
Diplomatic Relations Although the Germans still believe that the crisis can be localized, they ask France to keep the Russians quiet. Russia announces that she will mobilize on the Austrian frontier if Austrian troops cross the Serbian border. Grey proposes an Ambassadors Conference in London. Sazonov vainly attempts to persuade the Germans to accept mediation. He assures Berlin that no mobilization will be ordered until the Austrians cross the Serb frontier.
Germany The Kaiser returns from his cruise to find the situation worse than he had intended. He has learned of the slide to war only from the Norwegian newspapers. Officers’ leave is cancelled.
Austria-Hungary, The army begins mobilizing eight corps along the Russian border. Putnik is released, with apologies.
Montenegro The government orders mobilization.
Britain There is a gun-running riot in Dublin. Civil war seems imminent. First Sea Lord Battenberg issues orders in the evening for naval reservists to remain on duty and for the fleets not to disperse following their review maneuvers.
France Officers’ leave is cancelled. The fleet is ordered to prepare for war.
Belgium Call-up of reserves begins.

July 26, 1915
Western Front Attacks by the Crown Prince in the Argonne are checked.
Eastern Front The Germans are held on the Narew line; there is fierce fighting around Rozhan. The Germans are repulsed by ground and naval forces at Shlok in the Riga sector.
Italian Front The Italians take Monte Sei Busi on the Julian front.
Adriatic Sea The French badly damage an Austrian submarine base at Lagosta. Italian troops land and capture Pelagosa Island.
Turkey There is a major fire in Constantinople.
Arabia Saudi-ruled Nejd proclaims independence from Turkey and announces that it has routed Turkish garrisons.

July 26, 1916
Western Front, Somme Pozieres is entirely in British hands.
Libya British and Italian armored cars from Sollum raid Senusi encampments.
War at Sea U-35, under Lothar Arnauld de la Periere, begins a cruise in the western Mediterranean. Lasting until August 20, the boat sinks 54 ships, of 90,150 tons, the most successful single submarine cruise of the war. Periere is noted for scrupulously observing the courtesies of war, ensuring whenever possible that the crews of his victims have time to evacuate and make for safety.
Russia Sukhomlinov is diagnosed with a mental affliction and moved to an asylum.

July 26, 1917
Western Front Heavy fighting continues north of the Aisne. The Germans concede air superiority over Ypres.
Eastern Front Austro-German forces cross the Sereth and take Kolomea.
Rumanian Front Rumanian troops take Tehereale and Teius Hills.
War at Sea The 1st class protected cruiser Ariadne is torpedoed by UC-65.

July 26, 1918
Western Front The Germans on the Marne front are in a general retreat toward Epernay. British troops take part of Buzancy.
War in the Air Edward “Mick” Mannock, Britain’s leading ace (61 kills), is shot down by ground fire and killed.
Russia French troops join the British at Murmansk. A coup gives control of Baku to the Central Caspian Dictatorship, which plans the arrest of the local commissars. The commissars join about 1200 Red Guards in taking 13 ships and sailing for Astrakhan, but the Caspian fleet allied with the Dictatorship brings the escapees back for imprisonment; the commissars are later executed. The Czechs capture Ekaterinburg.
Britain The government presents a choice to the striking munitions workers – return to work by the 29th or military service.
