Thing is...Farmers in the US DO NOT WANT to live on Subsidies.
I agree with your analysis, Meini Again, but the issue cuts deeper.

The president and vice-president are the only officials elected by the entire country. That has led to a doctrine of "being the president of all the people". Trump has made it very clear that he intends to be the president of very few people.

It isn't difficult to write laws that will inflict severe damage on some states while helping other states. Trump's tax bill was one example. Since the beginning of the income tax in 1913 taxpayers have been allowed to deduct from gross income the amounts they paid in state and local taxes. This was done to avoid conflict among the three layers of government we have with taxing authority.

For most of the last forty years Republicans have cut humanitarian "social safety net" spending. Many of the states have tried to replace that on a state-by-state basis. Democratic states have done so. Republican states do not mind having people die in their streets, and have not done so. The result is that state and local taxes are higher in Democratic states than Republican states.

Along comes Trump and limits the deduction for state and local taxes solely to "punish" Democratic states.

These idiotic tariffs are another. Given that most international trade is done by ship, the coastal states rely most on trade. The tariffs are not designed to help industries so much as they are designed to hurt coastal states.

Default Conservative pundit admits he was totally wrong...

Max Boot: ‘I would take Obama back in a nanosecond’
Quote:
Max Boot was a foreign policy adviser in both of the Republican presidential campaigns against Obama in 2008 and 2012.
Despite his criticisms of the former commander in chief, Boot wrote that Obama’s presidency now “appears to be a lost golden age when reason and morality reigned.”
Quote:
“Oh, to have those days back again — before we had a president who was involved in indecent relationships with a Russian despot and (allegedly) a porn star,” Boot wrote.
Thinking about the current president can be “depressing,” he said.
“He reminds me that just 18 months ago — can you believe it was so recently? — we had a president with whom I could disagree without ever doubting his fitness to lead. We can have one again,” wrote Boot, who, like fellow conservatives George Will and Joe Scarborough, left the Republican Party over Trump.
He said he wants Democrats to retake control of both chambers of Congress during November’s midterm elections.
The GOP is now a “white-nationalist party with a conservative fringe,” Boot wrote in another column for the Post earlier this month.
