It's not a single singer that irks me but it's a style of singing... the likes of Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and prior to her death Whitney Houston. All the vocal gymnastics. Instead of just singing the song it always sounds to me like they were saying "look what my voice can do". It verges on yodelling to my ears. I'm sure there's great skill involved in this vocal dexterity but it just sounds like somebody showing how clever they are. Just pick a note and go with it! I have used this same grumble with jazz, so it's entirely possible that I am a philistine.
